I always wondered why there was never an axle ratio tag on my 71 340 Cuda convertible (3.23, 741 Non-Sure Grip, 7260 yoke, 11" Rear Brakes).

Upon completing a high pressure media cleaning of the diff case, I discovered that the ratio AND assembly date were HAND STAMPED into the case, about 2" below the drain plug, and upside down (as viewed from the normally installed position). Has anyone ever seen this before?

Opposite side showing no additional casting info below the 2070741 designation,as seen on most 741 cases.

Yes I have seen that before. That is why, I believe, that flat spot is cast into the housing. It has been my limited experience that the newer the car (late '60's) the less likely it is to be stamped. But all in all only a few are stamped even in the early '60s. The late 50's rears about 1/2 are stamped. That's a guess, but I was told that in like '67 when I was junk yarding looking for a set of deeper gears. Good luck!

I saw a 71 Road Runner that had 3.91 stamped in it - no tag
