The spec on a 489 case is 14-19 in/lbs with new bearings. I'll be using a solid spacer and shims. Is there a way I can measure this 14/19 in/lb without buying an expensive dial torque wrench?

yes see if you can rent one ... it's rotating torque , you need a dial type to measure it properly .

How about bolting an 18" bar to the pinion and using your kitchen scales. Should read 1lb on the scales.

This is what I've always used.

Sometimes you just have to break down and buy some tools. Sooner or later a hammer and crowbar just won't cut it.

I bought this CDI on Ebay for $40.

It has a memory-needle.

Keep a look out

Yep, the stars were aligned when I set up my 8-3/4.

I bought this brand-new 4-foot CDI 6004 (600lb) click-type for $115.

I drove onto Fort Bragg and bought it from a soldier's wife.

When she brought it out from her closet, it stood almost as tall as her!

...and I won't depress you any further for what I paid for this.

Anyone in the Raleigh, NC area that needs help setting-up, I'd be more than happy to oblige.

I sold my shop press a while back, so you'd need to have one

I never checked with a torque wrench. I always went by feel. Not to seem like a smart a$$ but feel is all I went by. One you have set up 20 or so you will know what I feel.

That's an awesome torque wrench, Wish I had one! But that memory needle won't help with bearing preload. Nice tool though. And great price!!

No, I have a factory manual here showing preload being checked with spring scales. I've also seen factory tools that are just a calibrated bar that bolts to the pinion and a weight is slid along the bar until the pinion moves, then the torque is read off the bar. These days it's easier to just buy a suitable torque wrench but any method is better than just guessing.

If you have adjusted tapered roller bearings you know when you have the preload correct.
Assemble it without the seal to get the real feel and have a good selection of shims.

I disagree, I turn the memory pointer against the main pointer when I get beyond the breakaway-torque.

And also, the memory pointer is independent of its own knob, which means the memory pointer "slips" once it makes contact with the main pointer of the torque wrench.

You can turn and turn the memory pointer's knob pushing the memory pointer against the main pointer, and the main pointer won't budge.

The tension on the memory pointer is very light and it can be turned against the main pointer at any time in the wrench's cycle.

Just my

maybe im just weird but when it comes to a torque wrench I wont buy the cheapest thing out there...for 40 bucks how accurate is it really? I guess if your going to use it once and its your own stuff...but doing it professionally and have to guantee stuff...I guess Ill spend the money.

if you were local id let ya borrow mine or do it for ya, but ca isnt close to ct

I've always just bought the good tools I need for the job. It is amazing how many times you will use it. Buy the tool and keep it. A pawn shop is a good source. Bought all my Starrets there.
