What's the procedure for setting the valve lash on a '76 /6?

I thought later engines had hydraulic lifters, but here you go: Allpar

pull the plugs/dist cap/wires & whichever cyl the rotor is on set that cyls' valves. Grab the fan belt to shorten/tighten it with your left hand and grab the fan with your right hand & turn the eng. On the intakes (.010") set em till a .011" feeler gauge has a slight drag and a .009" gauge has no drag (hold the blade square). On the exhausts (.020") adj till a .021" gauge has a slight drag and a .019" gauge has no drag. I think '80/'81 they went to hyd

I always set the slant six valves hot and at idle. They do not lose much oil. Takes me maybe 5 to 10 minutes once the cover is off.

This is NOT the way to set valves. You do NOT set valves with teh cylinder at TDC.

Use the EOIC method, which means

Turn the engine until the EXHAUST valve just starts to OPEN and adjust the intake on that cylinder

Turn the engine until the INTAKE opens and is nearly CLOSED and adjust the exhaust on that cylinder. This insures that the lifter is on the back side of the cam.

The EOIC method works on anything from a Briggs to a Pratt and Whitney.

On a V8, Mopar has a handy chart for every 90* of crank rotation. You could write up your own for a /6 which would have to be for every 120* of crank rotation

The V8 chart

Use a feeler for "what you want" the lash to be, and one .002" or so larger as a "no go." Be sure to get the feeler in "straight" IE not up or down from the "easy" way to slide in.

Ist THIS IS A SLANT 6

And this is for big cams with long durations and lotso overlap. NOT needed on a stock cam TDC firing is just fine for stock and near stock!

Why do people try to complicate things for a guy????

Yes you do, As Dodgem stated this is a stock app & I could have sworn you were booted off of Moparts

I use the EOIC on my stock slants, only because I'm used to doing it when I had a race car.
If it's a stock slant, Rapid R's method, and the one on the Allpar link will work.
I pull the plugs to make it easy to turn the motor. Use Rapid R's advice to turn it with the fan, most slants don't have a crank pulley bolt like small and big blocks, so turning it with a socket wrench is out. If you want to add a crank bolt, hit the JY and look for a slant in a truck, many had the bolt.

I always perfered to do adjust the valves with the engine running, idle lowered to 500rpm or so. Grab a 3/8" box wrench and the .010" feeler guage for the intake and a .020" for the exhaust. Use some shop rags and drape over the plug wires/distributer/fuel pump to make clean up of any oil splash easier. You really don't want the valves to cool in the time it takes to turn the engine over by hand... Keep them hot.

Must have done hundreds this way "back in the day" when I worked at the dealership. No one liked upselling valve adjustments on a slanty and I always made good time =)

I do it with the engine at idle as well. Bring the idle down to where the engine is barely running and set those valves. This is by far the best way to do it and you really get the hang of feel with the feeler gauge. If you have never tried it this way go for it and you will never do it any other way on a slanty.

I tried lashing the valves on my Valiant while it was at idle. I never was able to get a feel for the correct amount of drag on the gauge, so I just used the EOIC method. I installed crank bolts on my slants that didn't have one so I can use a ratchet wrench to turn the motor over the 4 times required to set all the valves.
For the first time 'lasher', it's best to set the valves at .012/.022, better a little loose that too tight. Once you get a feel for the gauge, go with .010/.012.

Last time I set a '80 slant was when the valve started to open I reversed it then set the gap. You catch it just before it starts running up the ramp on the lobe. Of course hot.

Brakleen and a rag. I clean and dry the spring retainer. Then I mark them with a permanent Sharpie marker. I and E. Saves confusion, and it is permanent! Especially if you want to set while running.
