Mopar friends,

Can someone help this new Mopar owner. I bought a 691/2 a12 roadrunner equipped with a date coded 440. I noticed the damper is a race type don't know the specifics. Can I just buy a used damper from a seller and install it on the motor without causing damage. I found a harmontic balancer for the motor. The gentelman says it came from a 691/2 440 6 pack motor for 200.00. It has the weights installed so it appeared ready to install. I don't want to make a mistake so I hope I find a good Mopar friend to help me make the right purchase.

Thanks

If your date code 440 has standard 440 internals instead of the appropriate 6 pack internals you don't need or want the 6 pack balancer. Without knowing what you've got, it's a crapshoot...

As far as I know, 69.5 six packs came with the standard internals, and do not need the special 6-pack balancer. The heavy 6-pack rods and special balancer were introduced in 70.
It sounds like your engine was already rebuilt, so it could have anything inside.

Pull the old one off. If there's no balance/vibration issues with it in place, look and see if it has any external weights. If not, a standard 383-440 balancer is all you need.

That race type although not original looking is most likely better at taking care of the harmonics on the car than the stock unit. If it does not bother you I would just leave it on.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Even if he had balance/vibration issues, from what I have seen on this board is that it would not correct these. They only correct torsional vibrations that apparently you can not feel.
