Is there a proven method to refinish the natural black on a '70 E-body console? I just bought a nice 4-spd console with no cracks, but the black is somewhat blotchy looking.

My left and right lower dash trim pieces looked the same way. I think they're made out of the same plastic. Anyway, I used SEM Adhesion Promotor and SEM Landau Black on mine. They look really good. You can't tell they are painted. Light mist coats is the key.

I second that notion! Same process worked great for me too.

I bought a product called fusion made by Krylon. It is made for plastic lawn furniture. I did the whole inside of my 70 Cuda using black. They have glossy black, satin, and flat. I clean the parts with dawn prepsol and then with Dawn a couple of times. let them dry and put coats on all of the pieces. When I was done I hit it with clear coat.

It has been three years and everything is still good. Every once in a while one of the surfaces will get marred. When it does it put a quick hit of clear coat and all is good.

My computer isn't letting me into Photobucket right now so I just coppied a post from my restoration thread. I used the same paint for the A-pillar and kick panels. This gives you a good idea of what to expect.

I cleaned the A-pillar and kick panel trim four times to get them ready for refinishing. Once they were clean I sprayed them with SEM Adhesion Promoter and SEM Landau Black. I'm very happy with how the pieces turned out. The gloss level is very close to the original gloss of the plastic.

Here is a refinished A-pillar trim piece next to an unfinished one.

Before picture of the kick panels...they turned gray over the years.

As mentioned by Darren, SEM Landau Black is probaly your best choice for renewing the finish on your black interior pcs,...I use the SEM Landau black also, but I also topcoat with SEM clears, they have low lustre, satin, and gloss clears available, it helps inprove the durability of the base color you apply...esp light colors

Here is a test , when those kind of parts ( kick panels,so forth) look like that, take you'er finger nail (if you have any) and pull it along the surface. If the plastic just comes off the part is rotten, and not worth the time, its decomposed.
