So I'm having my new 440 dyno ed this Friday. This is my first professional build motor and dyno tuning. I purchased a short block off another member on here back in June. He had new rings and bearing installed at Jensens engine tech in PA. So I took my top end and cam to Jensens to have him complete the job. I'll list the specs on the motor below. I picked up the motor last week to paint and make sure that my current accessorys will work. Now it is almost ready to go back. I know that on the dyno, he will break the motor in, install the inner springs, and reset the valve lash. Then tune the carb as needed.

Now the questions.

What questions should I be asking at the dyno session ?

What kind of power do you think the motor will make?

30 over 440
Ross forged pistons
10.5 to 1
Scat h-beam rods
Forged crank
906 heads with larger SS valves. I don't know the size.
Had the bowls blend for the new valve cut.
MP 284/528 solid cam
Crane gold 1.5 rockers
E-Brock rpm performer
Pro systems 4150 / built for this set up
HP manifolds. I won't beable to use my manifolds at the dyno. He has headers to use.

I think thats everything.

With headers I would think you will might be a little over the 500 hp mark and 509-513 ft/lbs. With manifolds a lot less. Either way a day on the dyno can be a lot of fun and I'm sure you will have a nice engine on your hands. J.Rob

Should run pretty good. close to 500. I will say if you tighten the lash up a little w/ the 528 it runs better. I tighten a 528 up to .024/.026 and it seemed to have more "range". I don't think w/ the 528 you need to remove the inner spring for break in, they are pretty whimpy cams.

You will lose about 7-10% horsepower with the manifolds. I just had my motor on a dyno. It made 501 w/headers 468/manifolds so less than 7% loss.

What was I thinking....

If a bowl cleanup was all the port work done, I'd say this combo is good for 425 hp. I doubt that this engine will run on pump gas with that compression and 906's unless it is a quench motor. The manifolds don't help. Good cam choice though.

72blubird, what were the torque differences? Oh and I'm going to say 488hp

I am pretty much right in line with J Robb on the how it will do.
I would definitely stick with the plan of keeping the inner springs out for break in. It's not just the baby lobes we have to look at,but seat and over the nose spring pressure.
Too much spring can kill any cam during break in,in my opinion. Better safe than sorry.
Hopefully your dyno guy has a small set of headers ,not quite as good as running what you have for the car but would be closer than a typical large tune header
Keith

That was cool and 520 out of cleaned up iron heads is great!

Interesting: I did the same build, 528 solid, Ross flat tops but with a factory six pack setup and I ported a set of 915's for a quench engine. That was in my 71 Road Runner, it was a nice engine for that heavy car and ran well.

Me thinks the 906s are a tad more than just "cleaned up"

I had rebuilt 906s with a professional valve job on my 438" stroker in a 383 block. simply bolting on edelbrock heads felt like I picked up about 50 hp, and on the engine dyno with the eddy heads, it only made 505hp, 535 tq, (over 500 ft lbs from 3000 rpm through 5500 rpm)

VERY similar build though...but I was running the Comp XE-275-HL hyd cam. 275° advertised, around 230° @ .050 (I forget the actual specs), .525 lift

You should be very happy with the results.

I was a little surprised the torque peak was that high (rpm).
The MP 0.528" cam is very mild and has good street manners, as you found it will go to 6000 rpm with headers, etc.

What size were the dyno headers? Maybe that raised the torque peak. I would guess the headers vs exhaust manifolds are around 30 hp.

The headers he had were old and beat up. I would say they were 1 3/4".

I had read somewhere that with a small lift cam( around .500 with lash), that header would not make as much of a difference as you would think. Something about air velocity and such.
