Last week I noticed the 727 in my '72 W200 started leaking from the bellhousing/dust cover area. At warm idle, it's a pretty slow but steady drip. It doesn't appear to leak when it's off (after it's drained the bellhousing). I know it wasn't overfilled, and after leaking for a while it took 1.5 pints to get back to the full mark.

I had just pulled the horse trailer full of wood (~7klbs), but I'm not sure if that's related or not.

Is there a front seal that decided to start leaking? Any hope of a stop leak product () to 'fix' it, or does the transmission have to come out ()?

Thanks,
-Dave

Sounds like the torque converter seal has gone out. And yes, the tranny will need to be removed from engine to change seal. Save your money on stop seal leaks. They are just a waste of money.

Make sure you don't toss the new seal in dry and let the whole process start all over again!

I'd check the pump bolts too if you are going to pull out the trans, been bit on the ass by this once.

You might have simply overheated the trans pulling a very heavy load, I'd wait a few days to see if the problem "goes away" I have seen them get hot enough to puke out the vent.

There are a couple of areas that the leak is coming from. The pump seal is the most obvious, but it can also be leaking from the pump mounting "O" RING and the pump gasket. It is also possible that the reason for the leaking, the converter hub (or neck)is damaged and has torn the seal.
When you pull the transmission, check the hub. It must have a mirror like finish. If the hub is worn, then check the pump bushing, as that is normally the cause of excessive hub wear.
So called leak fixer uppers(seal swellers) are as others have said a waste of $$$$$.
If you're looking for a quick fix, put a tablespoon of brake fluid in the transmission and it will do the same thing.
The reason it quits running after you shut it off, the pump is no longer running and creating pressure.

Thanks. Not what I wanted to hear though AFAIK, the trans was last out and rebuilt in the mid 80's, so it's had a pretty good run.

I may or may not have pulled two more heavy loads after noticing the leak (what, had to get wood before winter )

I will check to see if isn't somehow coming from the vent on top or not. Otherwise, if I need to pull it, I may as well replace it with an OD trans.

Could also be the vent.

Maybe dodged a bullet? I drove it ~15 miles today, and afterwards it only dripped once in the minute or two I watched it. A few days ago when I got back from pulling the trailer it was dripping every ~5 seconds.

I still need to see if I can get a look at the vent to see if it was coming from there or not, but I think for now I may be ok

Thanks for the replies
