Lookin at buyin a '92 Dodge Ram D150, 318 Magnum w/ MPFI. Besides a few more horses, how do these compare reliability wise with throttle body injected 318's? Truck has about 230,000km. Thks.

The Magnum has superior injection system, ignition and is bit better in the fuel efficiency department. The heads are great but have a slight tendency to crack. At that mileage expect to do the coil, cap and rotor, water pump and a viscous clutch. That's all I've had to do on my 360 Magnum and it's at 180,000 miles.

A TBI 318 makes a great doorstop. I had a '90 version in a truck and the injection system left alot to be desired. Any cold weather and it would refuse to start. Burnt oil too-disappointing for new vehicle. From a reliability standpoint, I wouldn't have another.

The only TBI worth getting is the 360 for it's factory roller cam and the endless potential for hot-rodding. They are actually pretty stout even in stock form.

*edit* As for the "soup-can" body only get it if you don't mind excessive wind noise and a rough ride. One year newer (the 2nd Gen) is a 100 times better truck.

Thanks for the feedback, Grizzly. This truck is in better than average condition for year and "maritime" location, plus kinda like the "soup can" look.

The magnum injection system is superior in all respects to the TBI. Power, reliability, efficiency, parts availability - the mag gets the nod in all those categories.

Agree with the above.
I had a 93 Ramcharger with the Magnum. I specifically sought out a 93 for that reason. Superior in every way to the MPFI 92's.

Keep looking for a 93 if you like the soup-can. I did, and it was worth it! If you want the ultimate though- look for a 93 with the Cummins engine. That is basically the 'ultimate' incarnation of that generation of truck.

And BTW- that truck served me well until it was rear-ended and totalled with 160,000+ miles on it.....

Good Luck,
CC.

There's a few trucks out there with well over 200k miles on a magnum motor. Most times though, the engine outlasts the truck. not many in the junk yards because of engine failure, it's usually the body rusts out, or the truck is totaled in a crash before the motor dies.

Yep, you're welcome. I really like the looks of them too. Some of the curves and angles in the sheet-metal remind me of the Mopar muscle cars.

But, I spent too many miles (195,000) in this one (an '86), and the ride and wind noise was unbearable. Sorry, don't have a photo of my '90.

After driving my 88 ram w/ 318 TBI, and having a 95 5.2 Mag I can tell you the TBI is junk compared. I'm gueing the TBI unit is about 50 less hp... it doesn't even run as hard as a 69 318 2bbl.

The '88 was a 170 hp engine, the '95 was 230 hp. The '88 was TONS better than the previous carb'd 140 and 120 hp versions.

The '88 should have been similar to the '69 in peak power?

what early 318 had 120-140 hp? the 69 had 230 and they run very well.

230 gross HP, not net. Big difference.
