Here is the short version of this story. I’m building a mild 318 for an A100 pickup. The cam I selected as part of the rebuild kit is a Speed Pro #CS644, supposedly a copy of the 275 HP 340 cam. The cam had no cam card or specs with it so I installed it and measured the intake lobe centerline. Here are the specs from their website: Chrysler 318, 340 and 360 Hydraulic camshaft, 1500-4500 rpm range, Matches Chrysler's 340 - 275 HP camshaft part# 2899206 279 intake/ 290 exhaust adv. duration, duration @ .050 of 210 intake and 220 exhaust, Vavle lift of .429 intake and .442 exhaust, Lobe C/L is 114. I installed the cam and degreed it finding the measured centerline of 107 deg. using the straight up timing chain gear marks. The MP performance engine book has the part number P4452782 (340 cam replacement) also at 114 deg. Centerline but the installed Centerline of 112 deg. I called Speed Pro techline and he told me the “print” says 114 degree centerline, he had no idea what the “installed centerline” was. Any suggestions? I have a +/-4 degree keyways on the timing gear that should put me at 111 degrees and I’m thinking that is probably the way to go but any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Well if it is in at 107 that's where I would leave it. Seen a 351 ford kit with pretty much the same cam and calls for 107 install??? Wide LSA cams seem to want more than the 2 to 4 a 108 or 110 call for?? and we know they usually like 4 to 6 ??

The + 4 deg would put you at 103 ish - 4 to go back to 111 and they are never exact! Advancing a cam smaller number retarding bigger. So to de tune it go back to 111/112 if that is what you want not everyone likes the motor to have pop!

If its in at 107 I'd leave it or if you want even more low end torque put it in at 105 ... but then and still should check the valve to piston clearance

seems most aftermarket cams now-a-days calls for a 107-110 installed CL, even if the LSA is 112-114.
I did a cam on a buddy's 360, 230/240 at .050, 114 LSA "boost cam" for a supercharger build.
cam card said to put it at 110 installed.
another 360 I built, we went with a 230/236 on a 112 LSA for an NA build, that cam was also "designed" to be installed at 110.
my 222/228 Hughes "whiplash" cam for my 360 magnum is on a 107LSA and going from memory it said to install it at 104 or 106, I don't remember now.

Quote:
I would install it at 111 to 109 on the intake valve centerline and I would check the exhaust lobe centerline to see it is advanced as much as the intake is, IE ILC is 109 ATDC exhuast should be 119 BTDC I never liked moving the installed intake centerline more than 6 degrees from straight up do to past testing showing that after 6 degrees the motors started loosing power or running slower at the track BTW, all the SB I have built and tuned for the drag had 104 to 106 lobe centercamshafts and we treid installing them from 101 to 111 in two degrees increments on the intake lobe centers on the engine dyno, all three cams,105,107 and 110 LSA in that motor liked bewteen 3 and 5 degrees intake lobe center advance for best HP and torque
Gonna matter where you want the torque band to be at... I have gone as far as 8 degrees advanced and it made a ton of low end torque but I ran out of upper rpm power... that was in at 99*

Thanks for the input everyone. I'd be more interested in low end torque more than anything. Once again this is a mild 318 with 9:1 compression, Edelbrock performer intake, 600CFM performer carb and shorty headers. It's going into a 1966 A100 pickup with a 3 speed on the tree and will spend 99% of it's life below 5,000 RPM. Here is where the engine is going:

WOW not to change your original question, but I like that truck. Post more pics of it and info in the truck section. I would love to have one of those for an every day driver. SO COOL.
