I have a 68 satellite 383 with 727 trans. It currently shifts at 4500 rpms I would like it to shift at 5000. It has stock manifold and a carter thermoquad carb and stock kickdown linkage. Do I need to adjust the kickdown so it will shift latter. Which way would I would turn it to shift at 5000 rpms. Thanks for the help

if I am not mistaken you would need a 5000 rpm governer kit to get it to shift at that rpm when left in Drive for auto shifts. the TPV linkage would raise the shift points and when it would kickdown from 3rd with a part throttle kickdown VB but would shift back to 3rd at WOT at the governer setting. and the 68 VB does not have any part throttle kickdown, only a WOT kickdown so the governer setting is shifting back to 3rd at 4500 rpm. I could be mistaken though.

I thought the kick down was for wot shift points wasnt sure.
No , it's for part throttle , it's actual name is THROTTLE VALVE Linkage .
The governor weights on the output shaft control wide open throttle shifts, as scratchy said .

While the governor does limit the maximum auto shift rpm, the linkage must also allow the governor to reach its limit.
Adjusting the linkage so that the trans lever if full back at WOT makes the governor the final control...and be sure WOT under the hood is also WOT at the pedal.

I understand that but the linkage adjustment might be the reason it won't. If the trans lever is all the way back when the throttle is floored and it still shifts at 4500 the only solution is to change the governor....try the easy stuff first.

Was there any factory trans , other than a HEMI , that shifted at WOT above 4800 ???

The auto upshift rpm depends on some variables...one of them is how quickly the engine reaches the particular rpm and axle ratio plays a big part in that.
IOW, take two identical cars, one with 2.76 gears and the other with 4.10's....the one with 2.76's might upshift at 4500 while the one with 4.10's might upshift at 5000 simply because it got to that rpm while the trans was trying to shift at 4500.

Oh, yeah, 904s in Colts, 4-cyl Jeeps, 340s, etc.
Regardless, the KD linkage must be adjust to specs. Insufficient T/pressure will cook a trans - quickly!
