2001 Ram 4X4. Today I was driving down I-10 at 75ish MPH and my truck suddenly downshifted. It obviously grasped my attention, and as I scanned my dash cluster the "O/D OFF" indicator light caught my attention. Once I got off the interstate (just a few more miles) I pulled into a gas station to put the truck into neutral and park, pressing the "O/D" button attempting to make it go away...no success. Anyone have any idea what would cause such a thing???

My ram diesel does this at times.
In my case, it's a loose connection at the ATF temp sensor. As soon as the PCM sees an open circuit, it kicks off the OD and L-U torque converter to protect the trans.
Pull codes to see if you have something that kicked a code.

Thank you for the responses. RodStRace, I think you're on to something. I just went out and fired it up after sitting for awhile (2+ hours), and the O/D on/off button works as designed. So now I'm wondering why this happened. Is my transmission getting hot? Might it be fixed with something as simple as changing the fluid and filter, or is the problem likely deeper than that? Anyone want to ponder a guess???

The only code I have is P0601. I know that I should get this looked into as well, but...well, I haven't.

If the trans temp was too high. I'm pretty sure that there is a trans temp light in the cluster.trans fluid change will not fix a problem. It might need it,don't expect it to be a cure all. make sure you use the correct fluid. atf+4. is fluid full ? check the grounds on the left front of block/ cylinder head. p0601 isn't that something to do with pcm??? maybe trans went into limp in mode.

Awe, darn... It seems I've always had one code or another on this old truck, so I tend to ignore them. I just read up on this P0601, and it seems you're right...bad PCM. But now that it's cooled off the overdrive button seems to work as designed. In any case, I reckon I'll have to replace that PCM and see what happens from there. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. With any luck I won't have any follow-up questions.

My 2001 dodge munched up 2 tranys but it was under
warranty. 31 ft 5th wheel put it to work. Now I
only buy the 5 or 6 speed manual trans. trucks.

Snap your neck, mega G-force launch, is all I want!

I checked (and re-checked) all the grounds and connections this morning, and still got the code. Went and ordered a reman unit from Autozone, and they tell me that it'll be in tomorrow. Is there anything I should know about bolting this thing back in (i.e. use of dielectric grease), or just bolt it back in good and snug???

Is your key a thin metal one? If not, you may have some sort of anti-theft. Check at the dealer if possible about installing a new PCM and if it takes some special stuff. I'm betting that at least the mileage must be entered via a scan tool. Probably more...

Just a "normal" key. Autozone required me to provide a bunch of vehicle information to include my VIN, DOM, and mileage before they'd order it. Those were required fields in their computer system. I'm not sure what "flashing" the computer consists of, but I guessing (hoping) mine is received ready to install. Removing it didn't seem like anything cosmic. I'm mostly just wondering if there are any important "special instructions" to bolting it back in. I'm probably over-thinking it...
