Why do people insist on spinning way past the powerband????
Same reason as people make bad decisions on cam shafts...
Bigger is better isnt
thank you!! i didn't know how to say it nicely but really, if you only are making power up to 6000, what's the point of pushing it?? just to test your parts?

How do we know what rpm he's making power until? With crap flowing stock heads he's done way before 6k. If nicely ported he could be making power up to there.

The weak link in the 440 are the 3/8" rod bolts. They are the same as a 318 rod bolt (3/8"). If you rev the 440 over 6,200 RPMs, those heavy pistons really start to stress those 3/8" bolts. They will stretch, opening the rod bearing clearances and let the bearings spin over top each other (piggy back). Keep your RPMs below 6,200 and it will last a long time. Keep spinning it to 6,500 or over, you'll be buying parts real soon.

That usually don't happen because they are spinning too far past the power band and would et better to shift earlier and save on part to boot.

Not with the 509 cam he won't be.

What are you calling power band? Depending on the set-up, lowest et might be achieved shifting 600 rpm above peak hp.

This brings back memories. I remember some years back my girl griend had a 340 Dart and wanted me to race it for her to see what it would run. Well my brother went with us and I let him drive it first. His first pass was 13.87 @ 104. Afert 4 passes he worked it down to a best of 13.54 @ 105. Now remember this was with street tires that would go up in smoke if not driven right. I jump in the car and made one pass....13.49 @ 105. Well my brother comes up to me kinda ticked off and says ......what did you shift at ?? I said I dont know as I never looked at the tach ! That ticks him off when I do that but it is the truth. I just shifted by the feel as when it felt to be about done in each gear I shift. That makes a good starting point for me and I can play around with shift RPM from there. But many times my seat of the pants was on the money. Ron

Torque moves mass. Many times one just has to go to the track and try different rpm levels when shifting to find what makes the car quickest. As explained to me years ago.......overrevving just cheats the next gear out of seeing some of the torque band it should. 440's are mid-range torque beasts!

different animal maybe but i had a 383 w/ a 509 that i shifted at 6800 for best et. It had ported 915 heads, 509 cam, 10.5:1, torker II intake, headers, 750DP I also ran 40* of timing. I listen to a guy once say i had to much timing so I backed it off and it ran 3 tenths slower, I also listen to a guy tell me I was shifting to high so I shifted at 6400 and it went slower... my piont is you can set the car up, but until you drive it hard you won't know what to shift at or how to tune it. go WOT and when you feel it fall off or falten out shift it, that will be your shift point. The 509 cam has an advertised operating rang of 2600-6000rpm. Your shift point can be anywhere from 5800-6400
