I have a 1969 B body with a built 440. Has about 550 hp. Removed the thermostat and engine still wants to run at about 200f when the ampiant temp. is about 85. Water pump flows really good coolant through the radiator. Engine does have large 2.5 in primary headers. All coolant is new plus running a cooling additive. last summer car ran no hotter than 185f.

You need the stat to let the water flow properly. It needs to stay in the rad long enough to exchange the heat. Maybe the stat went bad. I would look for a high flow stat to go back with.

I want my fair share

WHEN does it now run a bit hotter? around town/stoplight to stoplight or on the highway. Do run at least a 180 stat (which is not causing the problem). Any parts/tuning changes from then to now?

What type of fan? Are you using a fan shroud?
