Never having checked for markings on the fast ratio steering pump on my March-built 71 340 convertible engine, I gave it a quick spritz with Spray Nine, and 30 seconds later here we are: Sassy Grass Green and Orange marks.

The learning never ends!

Bill - Mine were similar, but a bit more sloppy. The green was a close match to a 'safety' green.

Can you post some pics of your high pressure power steering hose? From the pics you already posted of the pump the metal line end of that hose looks the same as the one that is on my car (71 Challenger RT 340).

I just bought NOS 2891208 which has a different path for the hard metal line going to the Federal type pump. Do I have the correct hose? I did find a NOS hose that looks similar but is for 73 and later model year. My car has a June 71 build date.
Thanks

The 2891208 hose is for a car with the Saginaw (Key-Slot) pump.

If you have a June 71 car, then it should have Fast Ratio steering.

The correct hose info is as follows:

Service (Catalog) Part # 3420193

Engineering (Stamped on Hose) Part # 2891232

This particular hose has in insulation sleeve on it as well, and was used on 70-71 318/340 A-Body cars also.

The other hose found on non-Fast Ratio Federal Pump cars is as follows:

Service (Catalog) Part # 3420194

Engineering (Stamped on Hose) Part # 2891214

Bill,
Thanks for clearing this up for me. Looks like I have another item to sell at Carlisle.

Bill, help me to understand . . . in the parts catalog a 71 340 Challenger appears to take either a 2891208 or 3420194 (guessing different lines for different pumps), and yet you state the correct hose as a 3420193 (340 Dart or Valient). Not saying your incorrect but how would that be??

This is interesting to me as I have a 70 AAR that may be in the same boat. It is a Federal pump, and the hose has the insulator.

Thanks for explaining

Pumps actually installed on 71 model year cars (such as mine) have the solid pulley. I believe that the 70 cars used a spoked pulley. I will double check that tomorrow.

Yes, they are different. The 70-71 Fast Ratio cars AND 70-71 C-Body cars use a pump (3004799) with different shims in the pressure regulator valve inside the pump.

Easy answer: They simply DID NOT indicate the running change for the hose on the Fast Ratio cars in the book. There are many examples where applications are omitted, or are vague, in virtually every year catalog that I have (55-74). These are the things you learn after 40 years of being associated with the same products.

Note insulator and solid pulley.

If you have the hose with the insulator on the AAR, then you should see 2891232 on the fitting. 3420194 did not use an insulator. Once again, 2891208 (stamped 2891208) is for the Saginaw pump.

Bill,
Another question, what type of adjustment screw is on your fast ratio steering gear box (allen head type or a flat blade screw driver type)?

Do you know the part number(s) that are on the steering gear box?
Thanks

Both my 71 car (with an assembly date code tag of 0780), and Bill Meerholz's one owner 70 AAR (assembly date code tag 0580), have allen hex adjusters on the steering gear. The parts catalog shows different screws for 70 (slotted screw) and 71 (allen hex screw). Based on that, I would think that the overwhelming majority of 70 non-Fast Ratio cars would have the slotted screw.

Thanks again Bill for the valuable information. I will have to stop by your space at Carlisle as I have more things to purchase, but it all depends how much I sell.
