I'm thinking of buying a set of recon 906 heads for my 69 Super Bee. Looking for feed back from previous experiences with them.

Thanks.

I bought a set of 318 heads 7 or 8 years ago and just got around to using them. One head seems OK. The other has major problems.

On one head, they fixed some damage on a rocker stand and welded the oil feed hole shut. They forgot to redrill it. After getting that issue fixed, and starting the engine, I only had compression on two of the four cylinders. The exhaust valves are leaking.

I'd make sure to have a machine shop look over the heads if you decide to get them.

I'm surprised considering Indy Cylinder Heads reputation, of which I always thought was good.

I understand that Aerohead is Indy's assembly line econo version. We bought a set years ago & no problems but from what I've read I'm in the minority

Look for a parallel thread entitled "place to buy 318 heads".

Here is what a sage (me) said about Aerohead:
"The deal with "Aerohead" is that it is a part of Indy Cylinder Head. Now, that sounds really nice, everyone knows ICH. One begins having visions of low time slips.......
But search for board member input and you'll see that ICH doesn't do customer service. See that ICH sends new parts out the door that need to be fixed or scrapped. If you are going to buy any ICH product go through one of their dealers, the dealer can most of the time take care of you. But on a set of cast iron heads I'd say nonononono!"

This discussion hasn't changed in a long time. Indy makes a very nice head in theory but in reality they have been known for at least the last 15 years to have quality control issues. As Bill Clinton used to say, "It's a cryin' shame!"
Just do a search for Indy on this board, see for yourself. Don't forget to go to the race engine section.

R.

Thanks for the input. I've got a used set of 906 heads that have been sitting around awhile and need to be checked. May be worth while to just put some money in these. I found out by accident that my #'s 69 Bee has had 516 heads put on it sometime in its life and I want to go back to correct. I've got leaky valves on the left side anyhow so now is the time to fix it and maybe even stick a new cam in.

They're absolute junk. Years ago, I bought a pair of 2.02" 587s from them. They machined for the 2.02" seats, but .125" down, it immediately necked down to the stock 1.88" valve size. Absolute garbage. Took a lot to clean them up into something worth using.

Glad I got some input before investing in a set of these. I was prepared to head down on Monday and pick up a set of 906's. Like to find a ready to bolt on set I can trust but just haven't run across any.

Just an FYI the 516's are closed chambers vs the open chamber 906's and without any additional work on the heads or block it might actually drop in performance if you just swap out the heads. I had to actually pull my 906's and install built 516's to gain compression on my 383...just my

My 69 Bee's 383HP is the original motor so it should have the 906's. That's the reason I was just going to do a swap for the correct heads.

Friend of mine went with Compuflow. Had nothing but great things to say about the service.

What do you want? We can do them from stock to over 330 cfm. The best test we ever recorded was 349 cfm.

You've obviously never paid any attention to the threads of Indy then ...

A head that flows that high at .800 lift is useless with a .450 lift cam .

Have I been chastised?

So how about a little more than stock? Because, I don't recall suggesting 340 cfm, but was offering alternatives from stock to 330+.

Question, is it "useless"? Or unneccessary?

It wouldn't make any sense to pay for a head that flows at .800" lift if you are lifting to .450".

But what can a head that will flow 340 cfm @ .700-.800", be made to flow at .400"-.500"?
