Hey guys, I have a question....I am rebuilding my 72 RR. It has a 1967 383 engine that has been bored 40 over with stock compression. The heads are 3906 stock rebuilt magnum heads. It has a 323 8 3/4 rear end. I want to keep the power disc brake set up in the car. I am running a 727 automatic. The car is apart and now is the perfect time to search for the "right" torque converter and cam for what I am looking for. I am looking for a cam that will give me an aggressive "lumpy" sound at idle while still being able to utilize my power brakes and with no further mods to the heads or pistons. I can use a vacuum canister if necessay. It will have headers with flow masters. The car will NEVER see the track, so I am really leaning toward street performance with reliability. It will have a dual plane intake and edlebrock carb.I have not purchased a torque converter yet either. Which stall should I use? As I don't have much money to change things...any experience with what I need would be greatly appreciated!!!

A nasty idle with otherwise stock engine for decent performance consider the Hughes whiplash cams.

The cam grinder needs to know your actual compression ratio before you can pick a cam.

Any major manufacturer's 11" converter will work fine for you.

2800 is pretty high for a street only car. Look for the road runner converter that came with the 335hp cars. They are an 11 inch converter but I don't know where you can find a new one these days. I think they are 2200 stall with the 383. You wouldn;t want much more stall than that with a heavy car IMO. You have to choose the cam first and the gears to go along with it before choosing the converter.

The stock road runner cam has a good sound to it because of the higher duration on the exhaust. I would not deviate too far from stock since it is a street car personally and with 3:55 gears and the rest of your setup. Sometimes less is more.

I ran a Hughes Performance 2,500 stall torque converter with 3.23 gears back some years ago. You can purchase one from Summit Racing. Good product and price. Performed just like a stock converter but would flash to 2,500 RPM from a stop. Personally I wouldn't go any higher in a stall with 3.23 gears.

Hughes Engines (not to be confused with Hughes Performance) has the Whiplash cam that was designed for low compression, stockish engines. Performs very good and sounds lumpy. I run one now in my 383 with 3.73 gears and a converter that flashes to 2,500. I also run headers. Give Hughes Engines a call.
