As I recall, the only difference in 1970 between a HP stamped 383 and a non HP 383 was the pistons (compression ratio), camshaft, and possibly the intake if the non HP was a 2bbl.

The Newport engine is likely a 2bbl . L code in the vin would confirm that.

That engine is modified so it doesn't really matter now.

what he said. Just make sure what "purple cam" it is. if it's a 484 or 509 you are going to want a 3000 stall and 3.91's otherwise it WILL be a dog.

Pretty much except it will be a lower compression engine, something near 8.5 if he is lucky, if the pistons were not changed. The Newport engine would more than likely have been a 2bbl engine.

My bee is a 4 speed, being restored by Alan Galant. I am and down to the engine now and i am frantically looking for something and found this ad on kijiji for 383 has 10k on it since refreshing...new bearings, new rings, polished steel crank(standard specs),906 heads with valve job, heads shaved 0.20 thou, purple street strip cam(lumpy idle)edelbrock double roller timing chain, high volume oil pump etc. etc. i went to look at it...it looks like an engine, lol
my research says 383 all cast same place only difference from hp to non hp is cam and lifters and intake (2 or 4 barrel)try to stay as origanal as possible or i could put cthe 73 440 that was in it back in. but for about 1200 i might chance this 383?

a 383 block is a block is a block, same goes for the heads. As others have mentioned, it's been apart and rebuilt so it's an unknown. If you're on a budget, for that price I would try it rather than putting the 440 back in. Worst case you have the block to build it correctly down the road.

Alan's has done nice work on the car, I'm sure you'll be pleased.

More than pleased with his attention to detail! just stressin over engine decision but like you said for the money its probably worth a shot my only concern is the cam he has in it, but i can deal with that. Option #2 is a 383 alan has lined up but it needs to be completely gone through, probably 2500 to 3500 by the time thats done! Thanks for the reply, heard Alan mention your name a few times, hopefully we can get our bee's side by side some day!

And if it is a 484 or 509 i'd change it before I installed the engine.

Just make sure that the crank is drilled deep enough to fit the pilot bushing and the trans and you should be good to go .

Did you hear the engine run ?

Stock the differences would have been lower compression pistons if 2 bbl. Cam, 383 Magnum Bee would have got a 440 Magnum cam, and the 383 Magnum probably came with a windage tray too.

Didnt hear it run, he assured me its fine, he had just pulled it out of his 69 charger(opted for a 440) He will also give me the cam and lifters from a 440 that was in the 383, said he labeled where everything cam out of, plus a bunch of small parts...starter, headers etc. going back tomorrow, going to check pad behind distributor for numbers (didnt know where it was located on a 383) and try to swing a good deal.

I wouldn't waste time or effort on the used cam for the other engine but that me .

I don't know how trusting you are but unless the guy will stand behind it till you have it running I would be leary of taking his word that it's ok. I passed on an engine that someone used that line on , it came with a taillight warranty , once my taillights were out of his sight so was any warranty . Good thing I did , I ran into the person that did end up buying it and it turned out to need to be bored and rebuilt, he salvaged very little from it and got nothing back from the seller.
