when using an antiroll bar with a ladder bar suspension, what is a common length for the attaching arms? also, can anyone show pics of the attachment of the bar to the chassis ? what material is used for bushings for the bar ? thanks in advance !

not sure you need that with the ladder bars. my 9.40 dart launches straight with no anti roll.

If the bars or SOME points are flexing the anti roll
will help but if its all beefy enough you shouldnt
need it

thanks guys ! my point for this ? was because i was adding a couple of bracing tubes to the chassis of my humpback and i thought it would be a good time to incorporate the mounts for a bar in case it is needed in the future. lots easier to fab stuff on the bench than laying under the car. doesn't "gregs dart" run an antiroll bar with a ladderbar setup? [63-4 red dart]

Yes he does run one

I have no clue where the info that an anti roll isn't used (or is only for four links) on a ladderbar car, but it is dead flat wrong. I picked up a solid .02 in the sixty foots and really increased consistency with my home built unit. It is all about how much you are pushing the combo. Unless you can dead hook in a rain storm it should show some improvement, form very little in an over tired car to a lot in one with lots of torque off the line like mine.
In the first build I used a mild steel tube of 1.25 diameter and .125 thick . I bent that on the first pass. Guess you might say it had a little roll rotation in it! I moved up to a 1 3/4 by .134 and that is holding. I will post pics.
As far as the lengths of the links go, it is all about packaging and arc created during suspension travel. Too short and the stresses will get too high on the parts. I think mine are seven inches long.
If you look at the left side, you can see it is about 3/4 inch off the surface. Nice twist for one pass.

i thought you had that setup on your car ! thanks for getting back. this pic shows the stiffener tubes i fabbed. they go from the "z" of the chassis in front of the rear to the verticle drop directly behind it. the shocks are spread as far apart as i could get them, thus necessitating the clearance notches. the bar shown is a scrap pc. of 1 5/8 x .134 bar tube in the approximate location a bar would be if i go this route. this seems like a good place, as i seem to have ample space between the shocks/chassis/rear for it to function, plus it gives me approximately 7-8" of arm length space to connect to the upper ladderbar mounting bolt. again, this seems to me it would be easier to fab a mounting system for this now on the bench rather than re-fab it when the car is done.[if it appears it will be needed then.]

This is the kit I use... they offer different lengths
and different diameter bars... I like to use the
bigger diameter bars for racing

i'm guessing a guy could use a smaller diameter bar if using a kit with a 4130 tube vs. a home fabbed bar of .134 ms. tube ? what about pivots - bushings or bearings ?

Those are bushings... I have made oilite bushings
before... the original bushings have lasted years
in my car... in those kits the torsion bar is solid
with splined ends...not a piece of tubing

I am sure you could go lighter/smaller with moly. Check the web sights of some of the chassis builders, there might be some answers there. The main thing is to keep in mind the total length of the tube, and how much twist it needs to resist. In my case, the worst scenario was with the ladderbar front mount at the neutral line. check out the pic of before the anti roll.

I think I would rather use a "commercial" bar that has been properly tempered than a piece of tubing that would be prone to crack from the flex. I would think a piece of tubing would just keep twisting, where a true torsion bar would keep returning to it's original location.

Yeah the S&W is a true torsion bar(solid) with splined
ends.... on a ladder bar set up it most likely wouldnt
need to be as strong because its just covering up
flex in the ladder bar system but in a 4-link it has
a MAJOR job to do... some serious poundage is applied
to it

I agree, Raff. The next "GREATEST WIDGET YOU CAN'T DO WITHOUT" will be shock absorbers for the anti-roll bar!!! Just in case the coil-overs aren't doing the job.

True, unless you go so big it doesn't come close to being stressed to its limit. thats why that spare piece of 1 3/4 looked so good at the time,,,,er was it the fact that I had it? At any rate, it works, and hasn't deformed at all.
There are some folks on here that have the formula for how much increase in diameter equals how much increase in torsional strength. It goes something like the old tube cubed Vs the new one cubed? If that is it, then ad 20 percent for extra thickness,,,,If the cubed rate is correct then I increased the torsional strength by 330 percent going from the 1.25 x .125 to the 1.75 x .134 wall tube.

I just kinda agree with Raff's statement - " on a ladder bar set up it most likely wouldnt need to be as strong because its just covering up
flex in the ladder bar system". I've always tried to fix the root of the problem - if the car doesn't leave straight - adjust the ladder bars. If the ladder bars are flexing - fix the ladder bars. We just haven't found a need yet for a torsion bar setup on a ladder bar car. Installed about a half dozen on Mustangs with "stock" style suspensions, but no ladder bar cars.
