Does anyone have any experience or info on the 'restoration' ignition coil from Mopar #2495531? Is it as good as a Blaster 2 or should it be avoided? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

MSD blaster 2 will be a better coil than the RESTO coil .

avoided is kinda strong, makes it sound like the plague. what are you putting this in? street car, show, race? you're trying to compare apples to apples and you can't.

It will be used in a street car - one that is driven hard and often.

No - I'm not worried about stock appearance. I would just like something a little hotter than a stock coil and a quality piece. Over the winter I installed a brand new Mallory #29216 (made in China) and it lasted all of 200 miles. I went with the Mallory brand because I'm running a Mallory promaster (made in the USA) on another car and it has performer flawlessly for the last four years. I wanted a round coil so I wouldn't have to relocate to coil (like I would if a used a promaster or something like that). I was just wondering if the Mopar resto coil was any good, if it has the same juice as a stock coil, where it was made, etc. What brand of coils have you guys had good luck with?

I don't have a MP coil to do any testing with, but of all the coils I have tested on the dyno recently, the best was the Mallory Promaster with the Mopar Performance Chrome and Orange boxes. Since you want a round coil, the Accel Points/electronic yellow was next in line. Sorry I can't remember the part number off the top of my head. I can look at it later and let you know.
Coil selection makes a big difference on how well these boxes work.
There are better choices for ignitions out there though.

Thanks Keith. Maybe I'll just forget about trying to stay with a round coil and buy another Promaster.

For many years I ran a Blaster 2 on my car with a chrome box and always figured it was a decent setup.
After dyno testing and researching enough about coils and ignitions in general,I have learned a lot more than I ever intended to about them.
The Blaster coils are not a very good choice, they were intended to be used with an MSD that likes to do very quick, short sparks and they dont have the best characteristics for MP boxes.
With the right coil, you can pick up a lot of low end and mid range power with a coil that works with it.

The resto coil from Mopar performence is discontinued and i haven't found any one who still has one in stock. After reading this post i'm glad i didn't find one and spend the money. Right now i have the stock repo restoration coil with chrome box with .25 ohm resistor and blue race regulator. car runs great. I know a lot of people will say not to use the blue regulator on the street but i've been useing them for years with no problems. But i will admit i don't go on 300 mile road trips either. Not much choise when trying to stay stock looking.

this is very interesting!! could this be one of the reasons for the high failure rate of the orange box? what about E-coils? have you done any tests on them with MP boxes or MSD boxes?

@ keith. Did you test any of the petronix coils?

OP, while we wait for an answer on the coil question a suggestion, ditch the orange box. driven hard and often is not what the orange box is really designed for. if you want to stick with a MP product that will be plug and play with your harness, step up to the chrome box. i personally use MSD but alot of guys use the chrome as it's rated for higher rpm usage.

Pertronics coils are made in china , at least they were 5 years ago when I bought then returned the flamethrower , bought the epoxy filled MSD , wasn't made in china it worked well.

I have not tried a Pertronix coil,I looked but have not seen any advertised specs.on them other than whatever they advertise for voltage.
I started testing coils with th Rev N Nator to see what worked best a while back, and it migrated to testing them with the MP boxes too.
The Rev N Nator likes a long hot spark, the MP boxes are similar.
Some of the coils out there don't have enough spark duration to work well with them.
When I started testing the Firecore ready to run distributor a while back with the Firecore coil I was advised not to try his coil with the MP boxes because they could not handle the current.
It is an E-core design. I did try an MSD E-core with the MP boxes and about 4500 rpm it started popping and missing.
I am not quite done testing coils and boxes, but someday soon I will have to move on to other things.

So it sounds like the accel yellow coil is the way to go for us guys who run the MP boxes and need a canister style. I am guessing then the accel will work well with the rev-n-nator as well.

The only problem with the Accel's is they crap out about 63-6500 rpm. The Mallory has run to well over 7000 with the Rev n nator and MP chrome.
The MP boxes change dwell and retard timing though around 4000 rpm give or take. Different coils seem to change where it happens.
I am trying to find a canister coil that will work at higher rpm. That's my main reason to keep testing.
