What do you use to remove the axle seal? The service manual shows a special tool. The manual also shows a special tool to install the new seal.

Hold the axle flange to the rear of the vehicle to let the splined end rub on the front of teh housing while sliding the axle out. When you feel the end of the axle hit the seal give a pry and the seal will come out on the nd of the axle. After you have once learned the feel it is simple and cost effective. Remember to p[ack the bearing with a good wheel bearing compatible grease, The are not lubricated by the rear end lubricant.

Use a large punch and a 10 lb hammer to drive one edge of the seal inward. This will spin the seal in the bore.

measure the depth of the old seal so you can drive the new one in to the same dimention and put some sealer on the ID of that recess so it'll be on the new seal when it's seated. EDIT If you dont have the driver that goes inside the seal pack the rear spring area with grease so the spring cannot pop off when it's driven in. get the seal started square & drive it in with as few strokes as possible (use a BFH) as each stroke increases the chance of distorting it.

There is a lip machined into the housing for the seal to but up against when installed. If the seal is driven hard enough to go past this the seal will be damaged and if it doesn't seat against it is may be able to cock or shift on its own. In short drive it in to the seal stop lip.
