Long story short was out this weekend testing for an upcoming NSS race at MIR Saturday fought some tire spin issues but my son made his debute in a Jr dragster so we load up this morning head to our local track I unload my car fire it and the throttle sticks I kill it instantly so no harm I pull the hood and find the throtle blade screws are loose that hold the blades to the shaft causing the throttle to hang up I pulled both carbs tightened the screws reinstalled hit the starter and while cranking hit the ign switch and BOOOOOOOMMMMMM the intake explodes ripped the top off and I have a blowoff valve on the intake to prevent this well at least my son will race this year as I am Done

Used to have this problem with the Edelbrock Rat Roaster on my Hemi. Welded up 2 different tops because of this problem. After I changed to an electronic ignotion, I never had any more isues with it. Not sure why that made any difference.

Hope you get it fixed. Have you modified your intake any to prevent puddling of fuel? Might help

Thats ugly and hate to hear it as I have done that to 2 diff ones so anyway I had Bob George fix both of them and he put on his "sneezer valves" and I have not had an issue since. However I am still very gun shy when starting the engine and cringe all the time. I know when starting you HAVE to have your foot into the throttle to keep the blades open to prevent any intake blow ups. The top and bottom can be fixed to use again so don't write off the whole season.

See pics of what mine look like and I have one on each side

i have just discovered the greatest thing in the world. same thing would happen to my sheetmetal tunnel ram and it happens to other guys sheetmetal rams that i know about.

since your useing the same carbs as me, i will let you in on what i have done. i left the chokes on and installed a manual choke cable and it works awesome! my car runs like my daily driver now. I can start the car and imediatly drive it anywhere

i really dont know if i would lose any ET or MPH but I dont care

Wow sorry to hear that. I saw you race last year with the 422 club as my brother Gary Nies has the blue 64 Fury and I went with him to US 13 last year. Your car looked and launched great. Sorry to hear about this. Ron

I am hoping that these NOS valves will prevent that. I put one in each end .

Well, that really sucks! I thought/hoped I had that under control.
Sorry to hear about your problem. I hope you get it sorted out.

Hey Dave, sorry about your explosion. Hope it didnt hurt the car like Kyle's did.. Rich will let you run a single 850 if you want and you can still run with 422. won't be as fast, probably, but you could at least get out this year. we have the cavities in the sides filled in to prevent puddling, we think that's the main source of explosions in these manifolds. I have the same pop-off valves as you as well, but i do have 2. I hold the throttle open a bit when i start it also..

Filling in the low areas is the best way to stop gas puddling and if your using Pop off (sneezer valves) then you need two,one at each end at the corners where the puddling occurrs.Pumping too much gas into the manifold at startup usually results in the explosion.

Scarry part is I have the stuffers and blow off valve I had several conversations with Dave and Doug Duell on these intakes and thought I had all the bases covered and I was always "careful" when starting it so if you have one of these still be very careful when starting it even with the stuffers and blow off valves it WILL STILL POP I am no expert for sure but I have been around these things for a long time and I am not sure there is a absolute fix I am just glad the hood was not on it I have a few paint chips on the inner fender but it sure could have been a whole lot worse and of course all the ford and chebbie guys riding my you know what like a 10 cent pony!!!!

By the looks of this post it can happen to the best of us. Show some pics of the carnage, it could help someone one day.

In about 450 passes it happen to us one time. We have a pop off valve and we made a gasket for the lid. So when it went it pushed out the gasket so we just had to put in another gasket.

Really?

But anyway, the right way to fix this problem is to NOT have fire in your intake! You should never, ever have fire in your intake!!! NEVER!

i suspect some ignition systems fire a plug/ the plugs the moment they're energized (when the ignition is turned on). i have seen this. combine fuel in the intake, an open intake valve, and spark...

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

This comment makes sense. I blew up a Magnesium Hemi Crossram that had the lid raised 1" It turned out the cars owner had lashed the valves wrong and it hung an intake open. The thought about the ignition firing when switched on is an interesting theory. No fire should yield no explosion.

Did you have the throttle blades open? The fuel came from somewhere. Were the throttles pumped during the blade repair? No blaming here just trying to determine the cause. I had one of the very early manifolds. Never had a problem starting with the throttles open. New engine will have one as well.

It's not you ===== here is another true story that happened to me at a CC Events Race in Michigan and others saw it. I had mine running and I was cruising through the pits heading toward tech and just tapped the gas and the intake exploded and blew the hood off. Several Moparts members saw this happen so it not only happens on start up Now I do know many who have run this intake for years and never once had an issue so not sure what the contributing factors really are.
