Have a chance to pick up a 70 383 cheap. It ran well till it spun a main bearing. I know I will probably have to cut the crank or replace it. What will I need to do to the main caps? Cut down and line honed?

yes but personally i would assess the damage before buying something like that. 383's aren't all that scarce i would be looking for an undamaged core first...unless there's something specific that makes this particular engine desirable.

What he said , the block is going to have to be lined bored to fix it, how much though? You will more than likely need a shorter timing chain.

I would just pass on it and look for another .

If you can get that one cheap, use it's parts in another block. 383 blocks are usually almost free and fixing that main is expensive and a hassle.

Is the engine disassembled and can you look at the damage? I've bought more than one part cheap because the seller had misdiagnosed a problem with it.

I haven't seen the engine yet. I wanted to get some input before I even bothered. Where I'm at, I almost never see 383's, however I'm tripping over 440's. One guy has a rebuilder for $100, another has one he's been trying to sell for the past year for $195. I look on Craigslist and see at least 5 or 6 that claim to be runners for around $500. 383's are much more scarce.

Why would I need a shorter timing chain? Wouldn't the replacement bearings take up that difference? The only engine I have ever had line bored was a VW and the guy supplied bearings that made up for the difference. Never had to worry about anything like that. Just curious.

no the caps have a small amount ground off the mating surfaces then they're bolted on and the main is bored/honed to the original housing bore specification. this moves the crankshaft up in the block a small amount thus the shorter chain is required, they're available from most manufactures.

I know nothing about VW's so I can't even begin to question that .

Line boring your typical american made V8 as stated above involves machining the cap so the smaller and then boring it back to size.

I have never seen an engine with a spun main so I don't know which side the bearing spins to , cap or block, and the type or the type of damage it does to the block or the cap. But depending on how long it was run like that and whether the bearings were locked into one spot or moved around and really screwed up the hole is the unknown that only someone with experience can determine how bad it is and what needs to be done to correct it .
