The 471 I ran in my 69 Charger would turn a consistent 16 mpg on the highway. No joke.
10.7:1 CR w/Edelbrock heads. 4.10 gears, 28" tires... and a Keisler 5 speed w/ 0.64 OD. Cruised at like 2800 rpm IIRC. Ran low 13's at about 110 granny shifting.
The key component was actually the 870 street avenger that I tuned to the edge using a wideband O2 and data logger (Innovate LM-1).
Got about 9 mpg around town. I hit 18 mpg once or twice on some long flat highway runs.

Haven't had a working odometer in years, but best guess using mapquest data is around 11. It would be better if I would take the time to lean out the transition circuit, she's real rich at around-town speeds...I bought the meter but have not put the time into it.

Thank you for all the input. I would really like to go the 470 route and if I could get 10 mpg on longer trips that would be great. It would take discipline to stay out of it but if the reward is some trips down the track I think I would be willing.
What was I thinking....

I average 9 mpg with mixed highway and city, including 20 mile grades.
496" RB, 91 octane, 10.44:1, low .600 lift solid cam, 2.76 rear gears. Most highway speeds aren't even enough to get me above the converter stall.
At 140 mph, turning 4900 I averaged 10.8 mpg for the 90 miles of the Silver State Classic.
