Turns ratio gets you voltage, which is good for nothing but jumping the gap. You need amperage to go with the voltage. Look for low primary and secondary resistance in a good coil.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Lots of good info, thanks, guys! Now...Is there a such of thing as having too much coil voltage? Like I said, all I have is a MSD 6 AL. Would a higher voltage coil burn out my ignition box?

There are some interesting threads on the MSD boxes on Classracer. My old MSD-6A crapped out several years ago and this made me think it was the Blaster 2 coil crapping out. I haven't gotten around to testing that theory, but I'd try one of the E-core designs for the price.

This is the thread on the Blaster 2 heat soak problems. That was what I was having a problem with - it would get hot and shut off. It would restart after it cooled off a bit.

A high amperage coil would be more likely to cook your MSD, but they make it easy with recomendations on their website. For example, a factory stock engine only needs a coil capable of 20K volts. If you need more, theres something wrong w/ the engine. I use one of the first MSD HVCII coils and it's capable of 42K volts. The engine has been well over 7000 rpm(oops) with that coil.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

another food for thought

I had a 7al-2 burn out..was from a pro coil going DRY...

I called one of the MSD gurus that works on his own repairing the BOXES, and he told me to shake the coil and see if theres still fluid in it...mine was dry...he says thats what burns out the boxes with that type coil...

as far as too much voltage on the secondary side of a coil burning out a 6al, I doubt it...I jumped up in voltage with the Firecore coil over the HVC and Im not experiencing any problems...

as a matter of fact I have a Blaster3 coil with the MSD 6BTM box for over 16 years in my Blazer without a hitch...

Hey Ted. Yes, different coils absolutely affect hot hot an ignition system works. Give me a call tomorrow. We'll talk about the FireCoreCD coil. Good talking to you last week. My wife went into the Hospital Fri for a pretty serious surgury. All week we were pretty tied up. Thanks
