We are prepping a car for a customer to enter the True Street Challenge. Jeepmon entered it was well as Sloan. Although it seems to have become more of a dog an pony show than just a drag race deal. The car we are working on is a very nuice 69 Hemi Charger. Hopefully it will be selected and hold it's own.

Dom a few years back, we entered the True Street Challenge and was selected as an entrant.. This is something you have to do prior to the show along with pictures.. A committee then selects a handful of contestants..

The True Street Challenge is free of charge and I strongly recommend to anyone that has a street car to enter..

The year we entered, Sloan and his brother made the show along with 6 other street driven cars.. most of them being 12 and 13 second trailer queens..

On the first day is a show and shine contest.. at the entrance to the pits, all cars lined up, popped the hoods and was open for inspection by the magazine staff and spectators..

The next event was a 30 mile cruise around the outside of LVMS to prove that the car is truly streetable.. During the drive, the magazine photog was in a chase car and litterally hanging out the window taking pictures as we're cruising 55 mph down the road.

At the same time, a magazine judge would ride along with the cars to see how well they performed on the street..

The last part of the competition was actual passes down the track.. If I remember correctly, we had 2 or 3 free passes.. One of my hometown friends was also entered and on the last pass, him and I was paired together.. Just as we were pulling into the burnout box, the car in front of us oiled down the track.. so we were able to get out of our cars and talk with each other and the magazine guys..

One of the magazine guys told us that if we want a cover shot.. to think "Burnout"..

Thats all me and my buddy Greg needed to hear as when we finally pulled into the box, we held the burnout for a good 45 seconds.. From what I heard from the stands.. all you saw was blue smoke rising into the sky and two orange hoods peaking out from in front of the smoke..

With that burnout, I was lucky enough to land on the cover of Mopar Muscle..

Ya, that wont work for me as all of the cars I`ve seen in mags have pretty paint jobs and are more posers than runners plus they`d probably consider my car a "race car" because of the et`s and gutted interior etc.

If its clean, thats all they are interested in..

Sloan and myself, both small blocks were the two fastest cars there.. beating out hemi's and 6 packs... I came in at mid 11's, he ran in the 10's..

If the entry is still open, go ahead and try.. it only costs a couple of pictures and a stamp..

BTW.. are you actually going to MATs? The one year I'm not gonna be able to attend.. you show up..

Is this the same deal they feature in the magazine that's usually full of 15 second cars? With the occasional 11 or 12 sec car thrown in? No offense to anyone that's run in it, but most (NOT ALL) are usually VERY slow for the combination. It's sad seeing a 440-6 car running 15s, much less being put in a magazine for it.

Exactly..............12 second 528 Hemis? I`d be embarressed but that`s just me. Sounds like the wrong deal if that`s still how it is........... Jeepmon..........not sure and I don`t bracket race so was looking for something interesting to enter.

Defintely agree that the cars selected tend to lean towards the show side of things. But it is a magazine and they have to sell copies I suppose. It is an overall deal from what I understand, appearance road manors performance etc. The car we are prepping is definitely over the top and hopefully will run a bit better when we are done, but dont expect any 10 second passes out of it. The owner just wants to enjoy driving it and it is a very mild Hemi for sure.

I hear ya Al and my thaughts were more like a "rough around the edges" street car that runs faster than it looks. Just might attract some attention and sell some copies.

Dom,Trust me I am on your side. To bad those mags dont appreciate the effort it takes to do what you are doing. I say go for it. They might like to see something like that. Keep in mind though this is Vegas and you will be likely a low 10 second car here. We dont have Bakersfield air, which is usually killer. Look for DA to be above 4000' easy that time of year during the day.

Cool..........I suppose I need complete photos of my car inside and out to submit which I don`t have but maybe can arrange that. Or, we can pull an "Eddie Miller" and ask that you guys take care of it for me. ............Just saying...........

I say go for it, cost of a stamp is cheap! We were selected with this car back in '05 or '06 can't remember which year for sure. I had cam issues about a week before and went the easy way and brought the Challenger in Super Pro instead. At the time our '72 RR was running mid 12's with just street radials so I had a new set of M/T drag radials mounted and ready till the motor issue. Ended up taking that motor out fixing it and putting it in our '68 road runner which now runs mid 10's, wouldn't mind trying to get that car in the true street challenge if they would have this race that didn't conflict with Infineons schedule.

We may crash the party, and show up with this Mopar street car. It has only gone 163 in the quarter mile so far, but, that was granny shifting......

When told about the Street Challenge class, the owner of the car asked if he gets extra points for having the air conditioning on, the entire time, including going down the track.

Hey Dom, I did it in 2007 and it was fun. As said it was more dog and pony then race but it was cool to see the car in print. If you are thinking about doing it send it off today, it's getting late.
