I am putting a 4 speed in my car, i have a hurst shifter. I think it feels sloppy... what is a good replacement for this slop box?
I have been looking around and realize they don't come cheap. But I am prepared for that.

I will be racing this car and driving hard on the street so i need to be able to bang through gears with confidence.

anyone have a opinion based on real world use?

thank guys.

When I raced a 4-speed years ago, I used a Hurst Super Shifter, which is still a good shifter. I think it is basically a Competition Plus shifter with a different mounting that allows the shift rods to be in more of a straight line with the shift arms on the trans.

You can send your Hurst shifter in for a rebuild, it isn't cheap and turn around is what I think is slow. Super shifter is what I used for years,I have the original super shifter bought back in the early 70's , now they have a super shifter 3 ? must have did some more updating on something. The original super shifter did not have a reverse lock out, they came out with a add on later. Mine never gave me any problem in any of the 4 cars I had it in. Depending on the car , there is slight to major modifications to the floor and upper crossmember to install. What car do you have ?

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

If your looking to slam gears street or strip you might be interested in finding a Hurst Vertigate (RamRod) shifter.....here's a couple of pics of mine in the 64 Valiant.....people will tell you they are a pain to downshift (I say B/S)

I will also say go for a vertical gate shifter if you can find one...best thing I ever did, and unless your fingers are made of matchsticks, they are no problem driving on the street...I put over 3000 miles of street driving on my car alone this year, and never had any problems...Got used to it in about the first ten minutes of driving with it.

Good luck!

for just a little more than the price of a v gate, you can buy a Long Shifter.

OUCH $700 in Jegs for the long shifter....have a huge $150 in my Hurst Vertigate....but the Long's are sweet....just too pricey for my pocketbook

you got a heck of a deal on yours Rick, there's a few in the race section for sale asking 350 a pop for old stuff. buy direct from Long, cheaper.

You can buy refurbished ones from long, very nice units typically 300-400 depending on long or short arm etc...

Be careful with the mr gasket ramrods as hurst tends to not like rebuilding those though they do the vgateII without a problem.

If you go with a Mr Gasket V-Gate, beware of reverse shift lever failure. It can snap at the pivot point. It put me on the trailer at the drags. Seems to be made of brass and is very thin where the pin is located. But other than that and the floor and hump hack-job, I loved it

Hey Andre....was up???? I do like the long shifter....very nice piece & 300 - 400 would be much easier to swallow than 700 ....am also very happy with this Hurst unit

Hey Rick, the car is looking good, get a chance to use the shifter yet?

The only thing I don't like about the long on my g force is no reverse lockout. It's easy to forget what position the reverse lever is engaged in so I always check neutral before engaging first.

I've started buying up the vgates and mr gaskets. They are no longer manufactured, and hurst has no plans to. Trying to push all of us closer to those stupid automatics pos'

There's roughly a half a dozen Hurst Vertigates on Ebay right now priced from $75-$200.

LOL.....I have the 833 and shifter all hooked up to the 408 on the run-in stand....my early A 23 spline that I picked up for $150 ended up being perfect....quiet as a church mouse, smooth shifting and NO LEAKS

The shifter is also one of the smoothest operating shifters I've ever used

The Valiant is waiting on funding to complete

Thanks again for all your help

all of these shifter saw muncie or t10 shifters.

are these the same as the 833 shifters? Is it just a different mounting plate? what about shift linkage? can i re-use my current hurst shifter linkage or do i need to then buy the correct linkage for these shifters?
