Hi. Am finding out how much fun it's NOT to locate a single prong neutral safety switch for 65-68 727 torqueflite. Fleabay has them for 47 bucks with 11 bucks for shipping. Anyone know where to find one a little bit cheaper? I've checked the usual places like YO, Mancini Racing, Dixie Restoration, Dante's Mopar, Herbs parts. Everybody seems to have an abundance of the three prong NSS. Thanks, Joe

Have you checked with the local parts houses? Some things are around. you just gotta know how to look em up, as they won't be in the computer, have the counter person look into some actual books. Also Rock Auto is a good resource for older stuff. might wanna call a couple transmission shops local and see what they have to say. I wouldn't think you should have too much trouble finding them at a decent price. The places you mention are, for the most part "Race" orientated.
OK just checked Rock auto and they show the 3 prong for 68 (?) and nothing for older cars. It is only $9.oo and change. I guess the one prong is not so available as I would have thought. I think you can use the 3 prong and just use the correct prong. I don't know wich one but others will.

Wow that's pricey, thanks Joesixpack. Stumpy, I will be going through the archives. I usually have a hard time finding stuff there, but guess now is a good a time as any to learn navigation.

The 2 outter pins are for the back up lights and the center pin is for the safety switch. HMMM doesn't say it can't be used. Just wich is wich. See I still don't get it. Why can't a person just use the center prong?

Yes its bad and its leaking as well. Last time I bought one of these, I just went to the auto parts store and they had one behind the counter.................I guess that was 20 years ago. My, how times have changed. I can get the three prong from everywhere and cheap. The one prongs, I can only find on ebay for around 45 bucks. I will hit the transmission shops and see if they have any shelved. If so, I will buy a couple.
I guess if worse comes to worse, I can buy the wiring harness for the three prong, put in a three prong and cut off the two outside wires as I won't be using them. Joe

I agree the comb in the trans has to be changed to use a 3 prong. Its what shifts the trans gears and 3 prongs are different. The 3 will thread in but wont work as the comb wont contact it.Bite the bullet and buy the right switch.Rocky

After my last experience with NSSs I just pull an OE one from a junk yard transmission.
When I was building my 76 Dodge truck I needed to have all the lights working to get it thru the level 3 inspection at DMV. It had a bad NSS/backup light switch so I went into town and picked up a Bosch switch from the local parts store. The made in China POS lasted one time thru the gears and died. I was a little Poed to say the least and pulled the switch from a used transmission I had laying around and got the truck thru inspection. When I rebuilt the truck I bought a TCI transmission which came with a new switch installed.....this one was made in India. I’ll admit it was a little better switch....it lasted a week. The 35 year old switch from the used transmission is has been in the truck for 5 years now and is still going.

The rooster comb is simply the name for the trigger for the switch. Quote:
Look at the picture of the three levers (rooster combs) and the switchs below each one. You can see that there are two legs that work the first switch ,a notch and a leg for the second switch and a ramp for the third three prong style. You can see that they will not work if switched around. The switchs screw into the trans at different depths also. They won't work unless they are matched sets lever and switch.
You contardict yourself with this last statement. You said it can't be done, and then explain how they can. Hmmm.
Here is the picture that is in the tech archive article.
Although they look different. it appears as though any could be used. The last comb seems to have a high spot where the middle one has a valley, that high spot would be for the back-up lights. After the neutral both combs ramp down to release the switch. For the sake of not having to do it twice I might just replce the rooster comb as well. Here is the picture that is in the tech archive article.
The first one was for pusg button trans the second one is the 66 thru 68 switch and the last one is the 69 & later switch

early switch, Arrow points to the contact area. The high points on the comb contact in park and neutral to ground the switch and allow the car to start.
