If you are just looking for a nice street ride, deck the block, grab a set of cast pistons, mill the heads a tad, add a cheap summit 488 cam, DP4B intake, Holley 750 vacuum, headers and roll.

Thanks for the replies. This is a numbers matching block and probably the last time it will be rebuilt so I want to do it right. Also I heard that most rocker arms are not rated correctly and a factory 1.5 is like a 1.3. So if I'm milling the block and heads will I need adjustable rocker arms too?

Numbers block the best way , and cheapest, is to have the block done in a CNC machine, have the shop just square up the block and not cut the numbers off the ID pad , get the machined deck height and get a Diamond piston at the height you need to put it where it needs to be .

I'm building a factory spec 69 383HP ... block was done by member Performance_Only/Dan Costello, pistons at the factory deck height, heads cut to 79/80 cc to give a true 10.0 compression and a stock set of 906 heads (the preferred casting) prepped by fast68plymouth/Dwayne Porter , it runs what it runs ...

Thanks John from the blueberry man. I'm not racing this turd just making sure it has some stones if need be.

The machine shop I have in mind is set in his ways. They do good work and if I have the opportunity to add to the build with your guys help it is just free advice worth every penny.

Honestly I think my small block dart would run circles around my roadrunner.

It probably would, the 383 I'm building is going in my dart , hoping for low13's ... high 12's if I'm lucky.. I'll be happy with that .

What gears are you using for your pure stock build? My car is a 3:23 and staying that way.

if you do just get a set of the old Ductile rockers, you;ll be fine.

When I talked to Gary at RAS he told me the Ductile rocker arms are not a true 1.5:1 either. He said they can be corrected but it costs a lot and it's not usually worth it on a typical street/strip motor. The latest Mopar Action has a nice article on the virtues of stamped steel rocker arms. Just get the hardened shafts and stick with the stockers; no need to go crazy with the aftermarket on this build.

Also, consider going with a Mr. 6Pack camshaft. There's correction factors ground into the cam to make up for the lack of a true 1.5:1 rocker arm.

Take the time, do it right, now see what the underdog 383 will really do...

for what you want to do there is no need to go crazy with parts. you could spend an extra $1500 for about 25-50hp. Friend of mine to his 100k 68 383 2bbl motor, added new valve seals, new springs, push rods, t-chain 48 summit cam, MP orange box, M1 dual plane intake backed it up w/ a 175k convert and 3.55's and the car ran great. 14.20's driving like grandma on street tires. (68 Charger)
I'd just try and get the most compression you can and let it eat. Now if you are going to the track and you want every pony out of it, that's different.
