I bought a bunch of Challenger parts and in the pile was a standard steering wheel but the wheel is black. I only recall seeing them with a woodgrain wheel. Actually I usually see them just brown because the woodgrain is worn off. The wheel doesn't look like it is dyed or painted. Does the black wheel go with a specific interior package or was it the super bottom of the line wheel or?
Thanks...

Sounds to me like a standard steering wheel off a '72 or later E-body. Post a photo of it - is it a 2-spoke?

If it's a black pebble grain 3 spoke, it's the bottom line wheel

If it is a 3 spoke smooth grip surface it is from an A93 (Deputy/Coupe) car.

If it is a 3 spoke with a grained surface it is the standard wheel.

If it is a 2 spoke (Satin spokes with holes along the spokes) it is a 72 or later steering wheel.

I've seen those A93 steering wheels with pebble grain and some smooth.

Any idea if they came 70 vs 71 or Barracuda vs Challenger Coupes?

Exactly... A93 Coupe

It may have been in a 71 Challenger when you found it but it came out of a 72-74 Challenger or Barracuda..

I had a 71 Challenger Deputy that was all original at the time, my dad bought it in 77 and it had that same steering wheel...so it could have come out of a 71.

Um No... The Deputy was the absolute base model stripper, it came with the grained plastic steering wheel referenced at the beginning of this thread... You think nothing got changed by 77... I'd changed plenty of stuff on my 70 Challenger by that point...

If I can remember right, there are 2 versions of the 3-spoke black wheel for ebodies. the black pebble grain was a 71 model year wheel for the A93 option and smooth was for model year 1970. Also I think the smooth finish wheel might be rarer, less run before they switched over. - someone please correct me if I got this wrong.

I got one the pebble grain back wheels awhile back since it was cheap and I think they are cool - at the time I saved the info on this but it was from an old moparts post and not any factory literature.

Black smooth rim - A93 1970 Challenger Deputy or Barracuda coupe.

Same wheel with a light texture, same models but for the 1971 cars.

Both are three spoke wheels.

The two spoke wheel shown above first appeared for the 1972 model year.

Mine is pebble grain with a black wheel. I will post a pic tomorrow. I really didn't expect much of a reply from this post or I would have added a pic.
So 2 more questions: What is a Challenger Deputy and what is an A93?

A93 is the code for a "Deputy" which was the low cost leader model Challenger... Rear windows are fixed... 2 speed wipers, stripper steering wheel..... The link shows a sales brochure..

I think you guys covered all of my questions but I attached a pic anyway. My wheel is attached. The pad is not smooth, it has a grain to it. The wheel is black and smooth. Thanks for all of the info. I had never seen a black wheel before. Mine is pretty nice so I think I will put it in the car.
One more question, in a A93 Deputy, would the door panels have had the inserts with the woodgrain or no inserts at all?
