I have a 727 small block bolted up to a 360, I was driving it a couple of weeks ago and all of a sudden it wouldn't shift into drive in auto or by hand shifting it. The trans probably doesn't have 50 miles on it since rebuild. It has the B&M Transpak in it and Kolene steels and Hi-Perf. red cluthces and hi performance kickdown band. I looked at the kickdown lever and it is just loose and doesn't have any spring tension to it. The lever just flops back and forth, so does it have a spring on the inside or could something have broke or come loose. I can't find a diagram of the trans. Thanks for ANY help.

Should be spring loaded to the forward position, sounds like the valve is stuck fully in which would make the trans act like your at wide open throttle... Who built it? Take it back... Or pull the pan & look at the valve that the linkage pushes on...

What RT said pull the pan ASAP & dont drive it until you dig in & deal w it. W pan off you should see (or feel) something amiss

Does the valve body have to come off also and do you know if there is suppose to be a spring there or not?

The valve body doesn't have to come off to check and the spring is inside the valve body behind the manual valve. When you drop the pan you will be able to see what valve is moved by the kickdown lever. Make sure that valve works in and out easily. Here's a link to a 727 breakdown with pics. http://www.yetanotherdomain.org/64dodge/transmission/allparts.html

If the e-clip holding the kickdown lever shaft comes off, the shaft can drop down enough to miss the end of the spring-loaded valve.

Another possibility is a broken weld that secures the cam to the shaft, the pic below shows the weld.

The throttle valve is kina funky, it could be sticking, broken said spring, ect. Pull pan for sure. Expect a mess when pulling pan unless the builder is awsome and put in a drain.

Catch the oil into a clean pan and reuse it.

I read this the other day and it is very confusing to me , can you snap a picture of the side of the carb wit hthe linkage and attach it to this thread?

was the car running or not with you pushed on the linkage ? and when you did it did you remove the spring that pulls the linkage forward against the carb stud ?

If I remember right the throttle valve in the trans isn't pushed out against the lever on the valvebody when the engine is OFF so you will have some dead play ...
