Growing up on a farm I had many an opportunity to change oil in our large Diesel tractors. 15 minutes after starting with the new oil it'd be back to black. The used stuff had so many tiny carbon particles or soot in it, if you got it on your pants or hands the stain stayed indefinitely.

I just put the AMSOIL in my 2002 Chevy Suburban and it's rated up to 25,000 mile plan on having it checked around 6000 and 12000 miles just to see, it quitened down the notoriuos cold start valve chatter.

Well sure. And people get all in a tizzy over the 25K recommendation.

But a look back in this thread has people running store brand conventional motor oil for 10-12K and the oil analysis comes back good. Hey! Maybe the top tier synthetic is good for what they say. Actually, it is, and it does it all the time.

Be mindful though that there is a list of criteria on the back of the quart container. 25K isn't exactly a blanket one size fits all recommendation. It's 25K or 1-year whichever comes first for Normal driving conditions (basically highway driving). Everyone else falls into a 15K or 1-year whichever comes first recommendation for Severe driving conditions. This is where people get into trouble, when it wasn't explained to them or they didn't take the time to read the nomenclature.

And then there's the topic of the OIL FILTER, but we've already covered that here before.

humm..

maybe why this vintage 73 mopar filter I just bought says "will last for 15,000 miles or 1 yr" right on the mopar box.

we shall see on the 440 truck

could the rule of thumb on every 3,000 miles be a scam to sell more oil and filters by the big oil companys..

I know I have seen my uncles 318 engine torn down after it spun #3 & #4 rod bearings and no oil changes for 11 yrs.

it had a brick of cabon under the intake filling the valley, roller lifters were all clog and packed solid(why they ticked?) big chunks of carbon in the pick up screen.

was not pretty inside for sure.

he was one to add oil and change filters every once in a while, never changed it out, just topped it off

would the 3,000 miles be for old chebby with no filtering sytems?

There is some reality to that. The 3000-mile recommendation dates back to around the 1930s where an oil filter could be an option and may cars didn't have one.

Kind of puts things into perspective with today's modern oil/filters/mechanics.
