im installing a 489 sure grip,there is a disc like thing in the center of the axel splines, is that the thurst spacer?if not where should it be located,the disc does not look like the thurst spacer in year one cat.

The cone-type SG unit usually found in the 489 has a one-piece thrust block, the earlier clutch-type SG has the two-piece thrust buttons.

thx.and found good info on discussionn forums,identifid it as later mod,cone type,all looks ok,saw thrust spacers in year one cat,did'nt know what the were

Sounds like the shim one installs in a used up cone unit to eek a little more life out of it because they are technically not rebuildable. Do yourself a favor and epoxy a couple magnets below the oil level off to the sides of the ring gear to catch the metal chips that POS is going to make everytime you take a corner .

You will need the thrust spacer in there to set axle end play on a stock setup. Or you could install the greeen bearings on the axles and then you can throw the thrust spacer's away. Ron
