I guess it's not a common issue but the reason the Fed's changed the regulation so it was visible from the outside was so they could check cars park and without the owner there to open the car (door). They could check out a suspicious car parked on the street or check the VIN without the driver getting out and what law inforcement officer wants to put there life on the line by bending down to check a door VIN with the driver there or behind him or her???? Odd that they suggest it being put in the door jam where it can't be seen from the outside
I suppose every state is different, but in PA the locations where the tag can be affixed are very specific. I had a vehicle with one riveted to the cowl, per state regs. The tag was red anodized and if I recall, maybe around 3x3. They aren't going to research a proper vin tag for a 71 cuda, they are one size fits all, so that is probably the reason for not mandating original dash locations.

And again, I really don't see any harm in getting a replacement OE VIN tag. If the numbers elsewhere on the body match your title, and there is no sign of the car being clipped, just get the replica tag. If that's what the car is, then that's what the car is. No reason to take a hit if you decide to sell down the road if there is no deception involved.
What proof is there that the entire VIN on the title is LEGIT when the only numbers stamped on the body are the last 8 , was it a slant 6 or a hemi ...

Yeah John but I have a Hemi engine that was restamped....I mean was stamped with the entire VIN that it needs to make that original type VIN tag......does that make it okay It only takes one character in the VIN to change it from what it really is.
Maybe this is all on the up and up but maybe I would feel a little different if this was from a Moparts member with a little longer posting history......just me, I'm getting old and cranky

The chances of the body stampings matching the VIN tag and matching the fender tag are very, very slim. Can you restamp the body or transfter the numbers from a donor? Sure. Can you have the fender tag reproduced? Sure. Can you have the VIN tag repopped? Sure. And if you're paying enough money for the car for it to really matter, you should pay to have an expert go over the car.

Get the VIN number off your title and have a new one made.
.,
I had to get one made for a '71 Challenger years ago. In Ohio the car has to be taken to a Highway Patrol Inspection station where they check it out and stamp a new VIN tag and rivit it on.

I would assume the title verifies the engine used...and the title numbers(last 8) match the body. You can't expect to get a VIN tag if the numbers don't jive. I don't see a problem....

I have owned this car for 18 years ('71 Challenger). The dash pad was changed before I got the car. I"ve made several changes to the car. Planning to redo the dash and realized Vin tag is missing.
I agree there's a LOT of fraud out there & greedy, dishonest people who don't think twice about rebodys. I got ripped off by a guy in NY who sold me a 70 Hemi block, crank & heads that were "pristine stock, original & matching", only to find it was an ex-alcohol, grout filled race block w/ old, cracked heads. Only got compensation 2 yrs later when I read an article about him swapping the VIN on his N code cuda to an R code hemi & selling it for $80 g's. Luckily, he got busted for it & another car, too BECAUSE, a Moparts member caught it on ebay. But if the author to this post or anyone else is truly legit & lost his tag AND it can be documented that the car is truly what the VIN says, I can understand the need for a repop tag.
Because of my own folly, I lost the vin to my 69 RT/SE Charger & after putting $40K into the project, I had to sell it yrs later, to realize either my old resto guy or myself, lost the VIN. I told the buyer I lost the tag & was totally up front. I called Data Tags & he made me contact the local Hwy Patrol to verify & inspect the car & write a letter on their letterhead, that its ok w/ them for restoration purposes only, if he makes a repop tag. I'm still looking for the original tag & believe I will find it, but since I had all the documentation the charger is truly what the #'s say & had 2 other "authorities" (hwy patrol mopar guy &a mopar restoration specialist verify its authenticity, I'm ok w/ the repop tag. I want to protect our hobby & vintage Mopars as much as you all, but I can see rare instances where it might be ok.
If you have the title, and the cowl numbers are the same, contact www.datatags.com you may have a few hoops to jump thru to possibly obtaining a vin tag
DON"T post or PM your VIN on this forum or any other by those requesting it to "help" you

Fender tags are not considered legal ID. because they are located on frequently replace parts of the vehicle and many times discarded with the replaced item.

But it won't tell you what model it is, depending on the engine installed anyway. Take for instance the pilot 71 'cuda convertible that was in the mags a few years ago out of canada , it was a 383 2bbl Barracuda that magically turned into a 383-4bbl 'cuda. Engine and body only have partial VIN , new fendertag , Vin and Title and wala ...

But VIN does tell what model and engine 2bbl has different letter than 4bbl
L = 383 c.i.d./290hp (1970) or 275hp (1971) 2-bbl V8 N = 383 c.i.d./330hp or 335hp(1970) or 300hp (1971) 4-bbl V8
