I've been meaning to ask these for awhile just out of curiosity. What type of crankshafts are used in modern SS/AH engines (e.g. billet vs. forged, preferred brands)? Are they allowed to run reduced rod journal diameters as long as stroke checks w/in NHRA spec, or do they have to stick w/ the OEM 2.375" journal? What sort of bob weight does an SS/AH engine have? How many RPM do they turn? What's the life expectancy of one of these cranks (assuming measured in # of runs)?

forged by rules,, must have a forging line on one of the rod throws remaining
any size journals
2200 is a good bobweight
charlie runs almost 10,000 barton about 9500 others 9000-9200 valvetrain is the problem,, not cranks to run the engine higher
run them till you make a mistake and blow it up,, other than that they probably will crack on their own after 400-500 runs,, who knows

Jeff, does anyone run the Honda rod journal size (1.888")? Carrillo has legal rods listed for that size, so I figured someone has at least tried them. Brave souls they must be.
Just about everyone runs the honda journal

NOT to sound sarcastic......but i would believe NOTHING of any article, in any magazine...These guys are not telling anthing ..LOL What is in the article is "old" info im sure
I get skeptical too. But pictures of the re-located lifter bores and narrow cam bearings , with button head screws to retain them in the block are pretty far removed from any build I am contemplating. They did not give cam specs or show pictures of inside the ports......this didn't surprise of disappoint me. The point of the article was how they manage to spin the motors to 9,800 r.p.m. , and it did answer questions. I don't expect trade secrets , but I do know cool when I see it. I thought this was pretty cool.

i think ray was pretty honest in that article,, i think that since that they have backed down on engine speed but will have it back up over this winter due to their addition of a spintron in their shop.
the spread lifter thing was really done by charlie first i believe,, ray spread them some awhile ago and charlie took it further,, then further again.. it does help,, but the rocker system is where the higher engine speed comes from
and a motor with std rods in it past 9200 or so it a time bomb waiting to come apart,, there is alot of housing bore distortion and bearing pinching at the parting line,, so you need to run alot of clearance.. with the honda stuff you could run that stuff to 10,000 and not worry about it

i used crower and they were 250 each rod with the best a-1 bolts you could get,, but its not needed anymore really,,, a good bolt is fine with trhe honda stuff,, you dont need killer bolts like with the std housing rods
and my heads?? well im not the man for that currently,, not many are selling packages like that very often,, maybe charlie and barton sell a few here and there,,, im doing a new head now and trying to get it to do something i think is important,, and its a pain in the a-- we will see if i can get my act together for next year and test and come out with something really good

When did the rules change allowing different rods journal sizes, material being added to the cylinder heads etc? The intakes are basically a tunnel ram nowadays (what is the minimum the carbs are offset? 1/4"??), I can see what many liken these engines more so to a comp eliminator engine. But the same can be said for alot of the other SS classes anyway.

What's that drivel have to do with SS Hemi crankshafts? Go start a thread about ruining a classic pro stock with a fat lazy motor and a 2 speed slushbox.
On the SS Hemi crank deal, I think you guys need to shrink the mains if you have'nt gone that way yet.
