Seriously thinking of switching to a manual steering box in my '69' GTX over the winter. Any suggestions on which unit to purchase would be helpful!

I did the same thing a few years ago. I bought one of these adapters:

http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/mamastad.html

I also bought a used manual steering box and it was a simple swap.

If you wanted to buy a new manual steering box, I would consider checking out FirmFeel. A few years ago, I bought a quick ratio power steering unit from them and I really liked it. I would think their manual steering boxes are pretty good too.

I used the same adapter. And I bought a used steering box off ebay. It was in perfect shape. Ron

Thanks for the info,Preddy...Ronnie! I just checked out the Firm Feel link, and the faster ratio units(20:1 and 16:1)are N/A! I'll be looking for a NEW,or RE-BUILT unit. Don't really want to pay the $300.00 asking price of the FF STOCK 24:1 unit. If anyone knows where I can find one at a GOOD price, please let me know! BTW...Ron,how stiff does the steering feel at low speeds? I would think at high speeds it feels a lot more stable! Thanks! Randy B.

I used the same adapter as Ron and Preddy, works great. I personally just bought a used box from a member here on Moparts (thanks Mike!) that came with the box in great shape, pitman arm and drag link with the idler still there and the mounting bolts for $100! The production boxes are feather light and wear like iron.

I have that adapter. If you want to buy it I would easily let it go.

Saves about 40 pounds, helps build big forearms, steers like a tank at low speeds, doesn't feel much different at high speeds.

The trick is to find a cheap used standard gear like I did (about $50) so most of the cost is buying the adapter.

Actually I was surprised at how easy my 63 steers. It is much easier then I thought it would be and I like the manual steering as you can feel the road better. The only time you need to use 2 hands on my 63 is when parallel parking. But it really is so easy to steer. Ron

Hm.... I just put a manual box in with the manual steering rod. all stock junk. I think it was out of an A-Body, as I had to buy a new pitman arm for it to work in the Aspen.

I agree 100 percent. Chrysler manual steering is easy to steer. GM manual is a lot tougher to steer and really hard to parallel park with.

I've got the same adapter setup, only mine is the goofy older one that was originally used on a B van, that you had to use a manual coupler with. That was before Mancini made their version, with the power coupler spline setup. That stuff was alot more difficult to find before the internet! As a result of getting that, I bought a few nos manual couplers for spares, figuring nobody would reproduce them. The box is a good used one that I think I got at the Nats about a million years ago.

Used is fine, I swapped to one in my Charger and had no objections at all to how it steered, I liked it over the overboosted power assist they came with stock.

I had an A-body box and Mancini coupler, just have to swap the pitman arm, and I also thought the A-body piece uses bushings instead of bearings, but don't quote me on that.

The manual boxes from 6 cyl cars have bushings,V8 cars have bearings.I have manual steering in both of my cars (A and B body with big block) and they steer great.

The adapter thing is a total scam. I've taken several power and manual steering columns apart over the years, and the internal shaft (sliding part) is THE SAME! Chrysler used "plastic rivets" to create just enough drag on the sliding part of the shaft to keep it from flopping around while being handeled on the assembly line. Those rivets don't penetrate the sliding shaft at all...they just poke through holes and rub against it.
If you take a P/S steering shaft, and pull the center all the way out, it would actually touch the steering box itself, and STILL have 100% engagement with outer, or driving part of the shaft.

this may be true but the splines on the manual box are different than the p/box so the coupler still needs to be changed.

Why not install one of these babies? IIRC I got this one from Speedway motors. Was around 30 bucks.

Randy. I made that switch several years ago. I went with a Flaming River box with the adapter. I like it. B bodies are tough to steer until you get them rolling.
