I want to put a 518RH trany behind a LA360 engine. I already have a B&M flexplate to run a neutral balanced torque converter. Can someone tell me what torque converter will work with this set up? Will any 518 neutral balanced torque converter work? Thanks!

You need to determine if the trans is lockup or not and get the appropriate style, other than that any neutral balance convertor will work.

And the OD unit needs to be changed a little. Call SMR trans and get the parts and modifications needed to the valve body so you don't kill OD.

I run an A500 behind a 360....

Is there an easy way to tell if the trany is a lockup unit?

Actually i think mine is an A500 unit also. The tag says its a special government spec trans. I'm not sure what that means.

yes , look at the input shaft , if the splines go to the end non lockup , it is has about .75- 1.0" of the end machined it's a lock up

I look for an o-ring on the input shaft. O-ring = lockup, no o-ring (or groove for one) non lockup.

OD transmissions die from heat fast. Make sure you have a good cooler and not the stock in radiator one with the 5/16 lines. 3/8" lines minimum IMHO.

If the transmission has a two wire connector it is a non lockup, if it has a three wire connector it is a lockup.

You wrote in your first post that you already have the B&M plate for it. You'd better double check and figure out what transmission you have since the flex plates between the 500 and 518 transmissions are not interchangeable.

Chrysler doesnt use o rings on input shaft.

To tel if is a lockup style, the wired connector on it will either have two or three wires on it. Three wires is a lockup style.

If it's a non-lockup 500 you can use any old 904 torq converter. If it's a non lockup 518 you can use a 727 torq converter. If it's a lockup trans, well them they need a lockup converter and a regular 904/727 converter won't work.

OK, actually I have the B&M flexplate for a 904 transmission so... Are the torque converters different for the 904 and 500 trannies?

ALL 42RH/RE/A500 trannies are lockup.

in the '96 or so time frame the pump drive changed from 2 slots on the snout to 2 flats to reduce the propensity for the converter snout to crack. I'm using a lockup 904 converter with my A500...

why are you ditching the 700R4? the A500/518 is going to need crossmember and possibly floorpan mods to fit in an A...

Hey Patrick, not ditching the 700R4. This A500 is for my 1970 D100 truck. Need to get some better gas mileage! Thanks for the info guys. I thought all the A500 trannies were lock up too.
