Looking for a cam and lifter upgrade for my truck. Im not exactly sure what cam is in there currently but I believe it is a stock cam. This is a late 70s RV 440. Approximately 8:1 compression. Roughly 140psi in all 8 cylinders. 727 trans, 3.23 gears, 35" tires in a ~6000lb Ramcharger. I'd like to maintain some semblance of mileage as this is my driver. I get about 10mpg as it is. Truck idles at 18" of vacuum. Not looking for anything too crazy. In fact the driving factor behind this is hopefully clearing up some valvetrain noise that is potentially related to the unknown age of my current cam.

I'd check preload just to see where it's at. I'd get a cam with an earlier closing intake (not sure which one) or maybe as said a stocker (it'd be cheap) and advance it 4 degrees with a new multiple keyway t chain set as you'll be right there anyhow. Might consider tossing a set of rings in there if you wanted to open it up more

Valve train noise? Exhaust manifold leak! Usually the passenger side.
Possibility!

they say they can be amazingly similar
There definitely was an exhaust leak on both pass and driver's sides. I was foolish enough to install the cheesy paper gaskets supplied with the headers. I've since (yesterday) installed better quality gaskets and some of the ticking noise has definitely gone away. But there still sounds like some in the top end of the engine.

Take off the valve covers one at a time & let it idle & press straight down on each rocker arm (the lifter end) with a wooden hammer handle & see if the noise changes (lessens) on any of em. That'll ID the bad one(s) EDIT but since changing the gaskets eliminated some do you think there could still be some gasses leaking as header flanges are notoriously not flat/even. Can you spray some water up in/around them & see if you hit something

35" tires with 3.23s puts your 60mph rpm at 1862 plus a little for slip, 1954 rpm at 5%. So you do need a short cam. A Comp XE250 or Lunati VooDoo 60300 cam will work better than the stocker.
Tightening up the LSA from the stocker's probably 114 or 115 degrees to a 110 would close the intake valve earlier and give you more midrange.
Long tube headers will help too, if you rejet the carb to get the A/F ratio right.
