I recently bought a 1961 413 engine that was used as the foundation for a std bore 426 max wedge engine that was installed in a 38 ford coupe dirt car. This engine was sitting at a local repair shop in between the 1st and 2nd bay for years. The father built the engine in the late sixties and raced it till the early seventies. Then the ford sat out in the lot till the 90s. At that point the maxie was pulled and the Ford was sold off. The engine was going to go into a 66 4sp Sport Fury. The father passed and now the son has the engine and the repair business. The Son in helping Mom sell off some stuff and that is where I come in.

So I see this thing has the 8 bolt untapped crank and my question is what do I do with it? I am going to swap in a 440 crank so I can use "normal stuff". The crank is in great shape, the bearings look like candy. Does this crank have value or is it scrap metal?

Tom I went through this in my recent 1960 300F 413 engine build. The 8 bolt cranks are longer than the 6 bolts because they bolt directly to the TQ and don't use a flex plate, for this reason you can't run one behind a later model Torqueflight transmission. You can however run a 6 bolt crank in an older engine and with a simple addapter (no adapter exists to go the other way to the best of my knowledge although some converter changes may allow it), use it with the old style transmission. For this reason i swapped in a later model 6 bolt crank in my build, that way I can run either style trans. So, in answer to your question, there's not much demand for an 8 bolt 413 crank unless it's to a guy restoring an old 1961 or prior Chrysler and wants the correct crank. My guess is that one of those guys might give $100.00 for it. try posting on www.forwardlook.net

If I remember correctly the end of the "61 cranks are extended. You wouldn't be able to use any of the newer trannies without some sort of adapter. I had a '60 motor that I swapped a newer crank into so I could run a 727. I'm pretty sure the '61 413 is the same unless it is some type of early Max Wedge. Max wedges had 8 bolt cranks but so did all the pre 1962 big blocks.If it is just a regular '61 413 crank I doubt that it has too much value. Maybe to someone restoring an old Chrysler,etc.

Pre-'62 crank on top, '62 and later on the bottom. Besides extending further there are no provisions on the early flange to register the later flywheel or converter hub.
