the usual $2.00 failure - far more to fix
this is Greg's 69 A12.Tuned it up on Thursday - first burn out Saturday big bang
woodruff key sheared in the lower timing chain sprocket.End result 8 bent exhaust valves 1 bent intake valve.no eddy head valves local so he will miss Judgement Day this Saturday.
only upside - maybe i should bolt his sixpack to my motor and give it a whirl on the dyno

Check the fit of the balancer on the crank snout... It's common for aftermarket balancers to fit to tight and not go on all the way... Once the balancer is on all the way the crank sprocket should be clamped between the step on the crank & the hub of the balancer, there should be virtually no torsional load on the key...

It's not slop you need to be concerned with, it is whether the damper stops when it is hard against the crank gear or if it stops short because it sticks on the crank snout... With no timing cover on the engine install the damper & see if it clamps the gear tight or if when the damper stops you can still insert a .002 feeler gauge....

He didn't say the balancer was sloppy. It may not be going on far enough to clamp the sprocket. The key sould be doing no more than locating it on assembly.

No slinger is pretty common, I prefer to use one but it isn't necessary, but like mentioned aftermarket balancers tend to be a tight fit.... Check it out, hate to fix the damage & not fix the cause...
