without removing the intake..I did take off the valve covers and discovered one of my exhaust valves was getting little if any movement
from the lifter. With the engine (360) running, when I pushed back on the rocker arm toward the push rod it was jumping some. With the engine OFF the push rod would move towards the lifter and spring back when let go.Im guessing/hoping that the lifter collapsed. This was on a fairly new Lunaty Voodoo cam and lifter installation less than 50 miles. I hope I broke it in right and proper, but had no tack on it to get to my 1200 rpms during break in.Removing the intake will tell the tale when I look at the lobe of the cam.But just wanted to see what the experts here have to say first.I'm afraid to look. LOL MAN that was making a loud popping through the carb

See if you can get a long thin screwdriver etc and see if you can rest it on lifter body while someone turns crank slowly for you to see if the lifter is still lifting as much as it should(to rule out cam lobe). If it's popping through carb at idle, I would bet a lobe is wiped.

a collapsed lifter that isn't opening the exhaust valve fully, would act the same as a fully functional lifter on a wiped lobe that isn't opening the valve fully.

could be either one at this point, but if you pushed down on the pushrod to keep tension on it, and could feel the lobe of the cam moving the lifter up and down, the cam just might be ok.

I am sure it is a typo as the break in rpm would be more like 2200 and not 1200.

You can pull the rocker shaft and reach down with a good magnet and pull the lifter out without pulling the intake.

Altho, I have done this on a bb, so in second thought, I don't know if this works on a sb.....

Just ran into a similar deal on a buddy's boat running a Ford 351W. Not a fresh build, but he'd killed the head gaskets and it had water in it. Found the rear rockers were REALLY loose, no resistance from the hydraulic lifters. Cam looked OK. Replaced rear lifters and it's back up & running.
Lunati says 1200 RPM? I've always run 2000-2500 for cam break-in to get plenty of oil splash, and soaked hyd lifters in oil before installation.

Cut open the oil filter and if there are a bunch of metal in the filter , if there is fine metal particles it is probaly the cam lobe/s going flat.

Break in the cam at least 2000 RPM for 30 min and using a good oil / break in lube additive.

Years ago I had a 1976 dodge van with a 318 that I used for a tow vehicle. I needed more power so I built a 360 with a ld4b intake, 340 heads and a hydraulic cam. On the way to Ocean City, MD. it collapsed a couple of lifters. Luckily I had a few hand tools and a long magnet and changed them out in the hotel parking lot. Some of the slots in the heads were big enough to remove and replace the lifters without removing the intake. Took me about 1 1/2 hours start to finish working through the van doghouse. If you have the valve cover off see if a lifter will fit through the oil return slot and if so its not a bad job. If its the cam that's another story.

J heads? This was about five years ago, but I remember not being able to fish a lifter out with J heads when I suspected a flat lobe.

If you follow fury4speed's suggestion and find metal in the oil filter then you will need to tear the engine back down. You will probably find metal in your main, rod or cam bearings. Been there done that! Good luck

Hopefully not...but, you need to inspect the bearings and get the debris out of the oil passages and the rest of the engine to be safe.

I needs to be torn down and cleaned , new oil pump more than likely and possibly bearings , cylinder and pistons under the wipe lobed need to be looked at .

fish the lifter out and look at the bottom of the lifter, you will know then
