poly,s look cool all dressed up, a reground cam,and 4 bbl intake will hop it up a tad,,different is kool,,,,,but the cost of parts for those motors and the early hemis,, is waay up there,,,, a magnum would be dependable, and cheaper to swap with a carb, verses swapping in the injection,,,

Don't know for sure yet - Going to start going through the engine in earnest this week. It was getting pretty tired overall, smoking a bit. I know the history of this car, I don't think it has had a head off in 55 years! )Oh, and yes, it is a 315 4bbl. says "Super Red Ram" on the valve covers.

I can't say about the poly, but I know for sure that the late model 318 bolts in a 55 Desoto that had a 291 Hemi in it. One was a direct bolt on, the other needed one tab extended for the 94 318 Magnum I used. I had mocked it up with 67 318 and it was a bolt in with no mods. They had eliminated one of the bosses on the 94 block so use a different boss hole and add a place to get the bottom bolt attached to the block (r/s if I remember correctly). I'm pretty sure that the poly engine mount bosses (ears) on the block are the same. If I can give you anymore details about the swap pm me and I'll tell you what I can. Kayse and I love the way your car looks, checked it out again at the Nats over the weekend. The pics in your rear window package tray have inspired her to do her own version of strong/great women in history in her 55 Desoto. Now I just need to get the car done.
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

If you decide to do a collage, here is how I did mine: I made the shelf out of luan. Then I ran high-quality copies on the best photo paper I could find. Here's the key: after you glue them down with spray glue, spray the photos with UV protectant available at most craft stores. You saw the photos in my shelf. They have been under all that glass for 3 or 4 years.

I tried searching for info, but anyone who's used the search function here knows it's "iffy" at best. Anyway, the 315 Poly in my '56 Dodge is pretty much toast and I am thinking later-model V8 & automatic transmission swap. May go small block, may go big block. Would like to do this without spending crazy money, I have a line on both big & small block engines at reasonable prices. I also own a '94 Ram with a 318 & 5-speed, would not be opposed to yanking this drivetrain and converting the '56 to a stick. (Truck is rough). Any input from folks that have done this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike
I make a harness to do a magnum swap. I have to successful cars done and another harness ready for the same year you are talking. This would use stock efi and have great driveability.
Look in the modern mopar parts forsale section if you are interested in this route. PS i am in dayton ohio if that helps.

Interested in having you car wired? Drag car, street car, EFI swap?

For sure, not many people work with these early Forward look cars. Heck, it was at the mopar Nats and a couple guys were overheard muttering about "that Ford they let in". Oh well. In their defense it only says "Dodge" on the dash, but c'mon... Here is the way I ran it for a few years:

How about original 56 fury power
How about a .100" over 318 poly with a 4.25" stroker crank kit? 427 cubes under those 2 fours would be fun. A poly and an LA are basically the same from the deck down so all that cool small block stroker stuff will work and a poly block will easily take a .100" overbore.

Nope, this is Mike - I have not heard from Kevin for a while. I took about 30 pics of that '56 w/ the 440, but they are all underhood detail pics. It's a really, really nice car, been together since the mid-'90's. It is black & creme factory 2-tone, all the stock trim, minitubs in back. I will be going back over there, I'll get pics then. I don't intend on ever putting power steering on this car, so the headers should be A-OK. Spent tonight painting the underside of the front clip, another member here (66Cnet500) is welding up my floors, etc at his house.

I was @ the swap today for a couple hours. Didnt anything big-ticket that I was looking for, but it was fun to get out to a Mopar meet.
I have a set of Hemi heads for the 315 being donated to me from a friend.

Well, moving forward. There was a lot of rust in the bottom of the cowl (you can see it in the photo above). I knew it was there, but with the cowl off we can get to it now. Member 66Cnet500 welded patches in the cowl, closed up the gapeing holes in the floor and put in inner rockers. Re-worked body mounts, too. Have a solid structure now, going to run a drag car-style engine plate rather than traditional motor mounts. This gives me the chance to skootch the engine around a bit for clearance. I just got a set of shorty Hedman Hedders from JEGS that look like they will fit around the steering box. Had the original radiator re-cored, better deal than a new radiator and no fabbing to get it to fit. I am going to have some real time off between Christmas & New Year's, plan on test fitting the engine/tranny then. I post pictures of the progess soon. Still have to find a rear end, Looking for an 8 3/4 Suregrip w/ 3:55 gears, preferably complete drum-to-drum.

Thanks ,,I really like my 56 ,and since I did the front end swap it really drives great...and STOPS .I had a ton of pics of the swap but a while ago my lap top crashed and I lost a lot of stuff, a lot of pictures ..all I can tell you it was very easy...The trick was I bought a complete 1986 5th ave....4 bolts and 2 p/s hoses and the entire suspension was out..just some lining it up properly a couple of welds and it was in..then I took the steering colume from the 5 th ave and that went in like it was made for the 56..now I have tilt steering wheel and turn signal switch..I even took the cruies control ,,,but never installed it...really not hard to do..done 2 cars now ..easy..my only problem was i used headers and they hit the P/S Box..took some header fabricating..Now I put in a 493 stroker,,went 11.85 @ 112 with stock Iron 906 heads and will do better with better slicks..now if you know anyone the 56 is going up for sale with or without power or with the stock 440 as I got a 62 Savoy I'm going to build Thanks Larry

Les, the '58 is a different animal from my '56, so I have nothing for you. There are a few guys on www.forwardlook.net that have done the swap, you may want to check there, too.

Well, the 440 & 727 are in, used a set of off-the-shelf Hedman headers, plenty of clearance. Did not need to modify trans. tunnel or the heater box, both of which I expected to do. Working on details right now (throttle linkage, wiring, etc.) Moparts member 66net500 fabbed up really cool motor mounts and modified the stock trans. crossmember. When I have the job done I'll start a new thread w/ photos, measurements & part #s for anyone interested in trying this. Can't wait to do a little
Very interested in this info

engine is from a 93 grand cherokee, as is most of the wiring, computer is a mopar perf 92 dokota, trans is from a van I believe and the rear is also from a grand cherokee( for the disc brakes), prop shaft is from a early A body, bolts right in Then I found some different wiring schematics on the web and started sorting it all out, used a relay/ fuse box from a jeep of the same age, everything works, even the cruise control
