I tried searching for info, but anyone who's used the search function here knows it's "iffy" at best. Anyway, the 315 Poly in my '56 Dodge is pretty much toast and I am thinking later-model V8 & automatic transmission swap. May go small block, may go big block. Would like to do this without spending crazy money, I have a line on both big & small block engines at reasonable prices. I also own a '94 Ram with a 318 & 5-speed, would not be opposed to yanking this drivetrain and converting the '56 to a stick. (Truck is rough). Any input from folks that have done this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

On 2nd thought, scratch the "318 5-speed" idea. Definitly going automatic.

Considering those came with V8s, I'd imagine it would be easier than the earlier ones with only flat 6s.
The engine/trans is the easy part anyway. Wiring (old 6V to 12 V), cooling, brakes, rear axle all come into play.
Try forward look forums and the swap info here for guidelines.
The 94 would be a magnum, it may be the best v8 to swap in, provided the intake/carb swap and fuel pump are in the budget. I doubt the stock PCM would play nice if you swapped the trans, although they could be made to work.

Yeah, I'm going to check in over at forwardlook, too. This just happened today. I am going to limp it to the Nats this weekend, but looks like that is the swan song for the ol' poly.
I just had a friend offer to loan me a 500+c.i.Hemi 4-speed '69 R/T for the weekend but I don't think I want to be responsible for that monster. But what an offer, huh?

I see your car often at National Trail and always enjoy it. Nice ride.

Thanks! I'm really on the fence here - I could build the 315 and invest a ton of money in it or go with a later model engine for probably less $$ and more performance, but I'll lose the "period correctness" of the car. It's still limping along, if you see me on the side of the road with the hood up, stop and say 'hi"!

It's probably of no interest to you but I have a couple 64 polaras with poly 318s in them. It's a little late for your car but they're available.

poly,s look cool all dressed up, a reground cam,and 4 bbl intake will hop it up a tad,,different is kool,,,,,but the cost of parts for those motors and the early hemis,, is waay up there,,,, a magnum would be dependable, and cheaper to swap with a carb, verses swapping in the injection,,,

Yeah, I really like the look of the Poly, and it already has a 4BBL. I just don't have a ton of money to invest in it.I scored a running, complete '67 440 w/ a 727 torqueflite yesterday at the Nats. Sooo...anyone have a straight axle setup taking up space in the garage? This whole project may take on a life of it's own

Don't know for sure yet - Going to start going through the engine in earnest this week. It was getting pretty tired overall, smoking a bit. I know the history of this car, I don't think it has had a head off in 55 years! )Oh, and yes, it is a 315 4bbl. says "Super Red Ram" on the valve covers.

Speedway as mentioned, or scare up an A-100 if the width will work. NOTE: there are 2 different spindles, brakes and springs on these! Make sure you can ID which you have!

I can't say about the poly, but I know for sure that the late model 318 bolts in a 55 Desoto that had a 291 Hemi in it.

One was a direct bolt on, the other needed one tab extended for the 94 318 Magnum I used.
I had mocked it up with 67 318 and it was a bolt in with no mods. They had eliminated one of the bosses on the 94 block so use a different boss hole and add a place to get the bottom bolt attached to the block (r/s if I remember correctly).

I'm pretty sure that the poly engine mount bosses (ears) on the block are the same.

If I can give you anymore details about the swap pm me and I'll tell you what I can.

Kayse and I love the way your car looks, checked it out again at the Nats over the weekend.
The pics in your rear window package tray have inspired her to do her own version of strong/great women in history in her 55 Desoto.

Now I just need to get the car done.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Thanks for the detail pics of the mounts. 1st thing tomorrow we are putting the '56 on a lift to see what we have to work with. I'm pretty sure we will be replacing some body mounts. And, of course, figuring out just what is wrong with the 315.
Glad you like the rear window shelf - that's one of my favorite features of the car. And I really like Kayse's idea for hers

If you decide to do a collage, here is how I did mine: I made the shelf out of luan. Then I ran high-quality copies on the best photo paper I could find. Here's the key: after you glue them down with spray glue, spray the photos with UV protectant available at most craft stores. You saw the photos in my shelf. They have been under all that glass for 3 or 4 years.

I make a harness to do a magnum swap. I have to successful cars done and another harness ready for the same year you are talking. This would use stock efi and have great driveability.

Look in the modern mopar parts forsale section if you are interested in this route. PS i am in dayton ohio if that helps.

Justin

For sure, not many people work with these early Forward look cars. Heck, it was at the mopar Nats and a couple guys were overheard muttering about "that Ford they let in". Oh well. In their defense it only says "Dodge" on the dash, but c'mon...

I got tired of that look and the paint was coming off in chunks so I removed about 50 lbs. of random trim & logos, had the holes welded up and shot the car satin black

I've owned a lot of "show poodles" and this car is way more fun. You do whatever you want without being assulted by numbers geeks. You know, stuff like putting 10 lug nuts on a wheel...

Anyway, we had it on a lift yesterday and it is far more solid than any of us expected. Since it looks like I have a good foundation to build on it appears I am going the big-block route. I picked up a 1967 440 & 727 at the Nats, now we are stepping back, taking some measurements and creating a build plan. Yep, I'm really leaning towards a gasser-style build.

Yeah, baby - don't see many 303s. '56 Fury was/is a great car. There was one at the Mopar Nats last year.

How about a .100" over 318 poly with a 4.25" stroker crank kit? 427 cubes under those 2 fours would be fun. A poly and an LA are basically the same from the deck down so all that cool small block stroker stuff will work and a poly block will easily take a .100" overbore.

Well, I am deep into it. Looks like I am going to run an engine plate for a front mount & keep the stock suspension (freshened up). There is a guy local to me with a 440 in a '56 Plymouth and I was able to get a ton of info from him and pics of his installation. He used a set of off the shelf Hedmann headers & they fit just fine with the stock steering box. Right now I am having some floor/cowl/body mount rust issues addressed. The 440 is back from from the machine shop and the Torqueflite is being rebuilt/beefed up. Unless the sky falls I see no reason why I won't be driving this thing by May.

Nope, this is Mike - I have not heard from Kevin for a while. I took about 30 pics of that '56 w/ the 440, but they are all underhood detail pics. It's a really, really nice car, been together since the mid-'90's. It is black & creme factory 2-tone, all the stock trim, minitubs in back. I will be going back over there, I'll get pics then. I don't intend on ever putting power steering on this car, so the headers should be A-OK. Spent tonight painting the underside of the front clip, another member here (66Cnet500) is welding up my floors, etc at his house.

I was @ the swap today for a couple hours. Didnt anything big-ticket that I was looking for, but it was fun to get out to a Mopar meet.

I have a set of Hemi heads for the 315 being donated to me from a friend.

Well, moving forward. There was a lot of rust in the bottom of the cowl (you can see it in the photo above). I knew it was there, but with the cowl off we can get to it now. Member 66Cnet500 welded patches in the cowl, closed up the gapeing holes in the floor and put in inner rockers. Re-worked body mounts, too. Have a solid structure now, going to run a drag car-style engine plate rather than traditional motor mounts. This gives me the chance to skootch the engine around a bit for clearance. I just got a set of shorty Hedman Hedders from JEGS that look like they will fit around the steering box. Had the original radiator re-cored, better deal than a new radiator and no fabbing to get it to fit. I am going to have some real time off between Christmas & New Year's, plan on test fitting the engine/tranny then. I post pictures of the progess soon. Still have to find a rear end, Looking for an 8 3/4 Suregrip w/ 3:55 gears, preferably complete drum-to-drum.

Just catching up to with this post again ....for the whoa on my 56 I used the entire 5 th ave front end clip...came with disc brakes and P/S and torsion bar suspension.. so the whoa factor went away with the 5 th ave disc's...Good luck with yours and keep posting pics..

Thanks ,,I really like my 56 ,and since I did the front end swap it really drives great...and STOPS .I had a ton of pics of the swap but a while ago my lap top crashed and I lost a lot of stuff, a lot of pictures ..all I can tell you it was very easy...The trick was I bought a complete 1986 5th ave....4 bolts and 2 p/s hoses and the entire suspension was out..just some lining it up properly a couple of welds and it was in..then I took the steering colume from the 5 th ave and that went in like it was made for the 56..now I have tilt steering wheel and turn signal switch..I even took the cruies control ,,,but never installed it...really not hard to do..done 2 cars now ..easy..my only problem was i used headers and they hit the P/S Box..took some header fabricating..Now I put in a 493 stroker,,went 11.85 @ 112 with stock Iron 906 heads and will do better with better slicks..now if you know anyone the 56 is going up for sale with or without power or with the stock 440 as I got a 62 Savoy I'm going to build Thanks Larry

Hey Mike do you still have all poly front mount parts? I just bought a 55 savoy 2dr post and it was a v8 car. They took everything out and put in a 56 plymouth. I am putting a 318 poly back in it. You can pm me or call me at 614-653-0568. Thanks John

318 is the way to go. Cheap or free and pretty simple to make power with if you want!

Well, the 440 & 727 are in, used a set of off-the-shelf Hedman headers, plenty of clearance. Did not need to modify trans. tunnel or the heater box, both of which I expected to do. Working on details right now (throttle linkage, wiring, etc.) Moparts member 66net500 fabbed up really cool motor mounts and modified the stock trans. crossmember. When I have the job done I'll start a new thread w/ photos, measurements & part #s for anyone interested in trying this.
Can't wait to do a little

Les,
the '58 is a different animal from my '56, so I have nothing for you. There are a few guys on www.forwardlook.net that have done the swap, you may want to check there, too.

Lee the 440 into a 58 should be a bolt in,as the 58 came with a BB wedge motor.. it even came with cross ram 2 4bbls..just get tha factory mounts for the BB motor and you will have to make the rear cross member for the 727 ..but a lot easier than putting it in our 56 and older mopars ..IMO Larry

Here is my 56 4 door with a fatmans front clip. It has a 383 in it with a Holley Projection unit in it.

We painted it charcoal and pink since we had a little girl.

Very interested in this info

Cool 56- dang, great to see another BB '56 on the board. I like the idea that you banished the chrome & billet for a semi-factory look under the hood. That is the direction I am going, too.
Got most of the wiring done over the weekend, pulled stock rear to weld the perches on a '65 B-Body 8 3/4". Getting close, gotta figure out the linkage next. Looks like I am going aftermarket with the Lokar cables.

engine is from a 93 grand cherokee, as is most of the wiring, computer is a mopar perf 92 dokota, trans is from a van I believe and the rear is also from a grand cherokee( for the disc brakes), prop shaft is from a early A body, bolts right in

Then I found some different wiring schematics on the web and started sorting it all out, used a relay/ fuse box from a jeep of the same age, everything works, even the cruise control

It was not bad at all, around 270$ from summit but then the fun started, they couldn't export it because they didn t know "country of origin" but thanks to a moparts member in connecticut we managed to get round that problem

Thanks Jim

hey all; I know this is a late post but I have a 55 coronet with whats left of a 270 poly. the motor is mounted to the water pump housing and no provision for side mounts to the frame is there I will have to make mounts to put in my 88 318 and trans mount as well and finding steel mounts for the 318 is hard. plenty for 340s and 360s but not 318s. 318 mounting boss is wider on one side.340 and 360 are same on both sides.

Sorry I just saw your post.. I have a 1956 Plymouth , I went and dropped a 440 and t- flight in it,, because I had one..Believe me a small block is a much easier install..The R/B has clearance problems with headers and the steering column.. At first I had the stock K frame and frame.. later I installed a K frame from a 1986 Chrysler 5 th ave..now I got disc brakes and torsion bar suspension and P/S.. still fighting the exhaust..later I stroked the motor to 493 cid..can't put better headers in .For a street car I would go 360 cid ,,its a bolt in with the FMJ K frame.I'll try to send some pics...
