I tried searching for info, but anyone who's used the search function here knows it's "iffy" at best. Anyway, the 315 Poly in my '56 Dodge is pretty much toast and I am thinking later-model V8 & automatic transmission swap. May go small block, may go big block. Would like to do this without spending crazy money, I have a line on both big & small block engines at reasonable prices. I also own a '94 Ram with a 318 & 5-speed, would not be opposed to yanking this drivetrain and converting the '56 to a stick. (Truck is rough). Any input from folks that have done this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

On 2nd thought, scratch the "318 5-speed" idea. Definitly going automatic.

Considering those came with V8s, I'd imagine it would be easier than the earlier ones with only flat 6s.
The engine/trans is the easy part anyway. Wiring (old 6V to 12 V), cooling, brakes, rear axle all come into play.
Try forward look forums and the swap info here for guidelines.
The 94 would be a magnum, it may be the best v8 to swap in, provided the intake/carb swap and fuel pump are in the budget. I doubt the stock PCM would play nice if you swapped the trans, although they could be made to work.

Yeah, I'm going to check in over at forwardlook, too. This just happened today. I am going to limp it to the Nats this weekend, but looks like that is the swan song for the ol' poly.
I just had a friend offer to loan me a 500+c.i.Hemi 4-speed '69 R/T for the weekend but I don't think I want to be responsible for that monster. But what an offer, huh?

I see your car often at National Trail and always enjoy it. Nice ride.

Thanks! I'm really on the fence here - I could build the 315 and invest a ton of money in it or go with a later model engine for probably less $$ and more performance, but I'll lose the "period correctness" of the car. It's still limping along, if you see me on the side of the road with the hood up, stop and say 'hi"!

It's probably of no interest to you but I have a couple 64 polaras with poly 318s in them. It's a little late for your car but they're available.

poly,s look cool all dressed up, a reground cam,and 4 bbl intake will hop it up a tad,,different is kool,,,,,but the cost of parts for those motors and the early hemis,, is waay up there,,,, a magnum would be dependable, and cheaper to swap with a carb, verses swapping in the injection,,,

Yeah, I really like the look of the Poly, and it already has a 4BBL. I just don't have a ton of money to invest in it.I scored a running, complete '67 440 w/ a 727 torqueflite yesterday at the Nats. Sooo...anyone have a straight axle setup taking up space in the garage? This whole project may take on a life of it's own

Don't know for sure yet - Going to start going through the engine in earnest this week. It was getting pretty tired overall, smoking a bit. I know the history of this car, I don't think it has had a head off in 55 years! )Oh, and yes, it is a 315 4bbl. says "Super Red Ram" on the valve covers.

Speedway as mentioned, or scare up an A-100 if the width will work. NOTE: there are 2 different spindles, brakes and springs on these! Make sure you can ID which you have!

I can't say about the poly, but I know for sure that the late model 318 bolts in a 55 Desoto that had a 291 Hemi in it.

One was a direct bolt on, the other needed one tab extended for the 94 318 Magnum I used.
I had mocked it up with 67 318 and it was a bolt in with no mods. They had eliminated one of the bosses on the 94 block so use a different boss hole and add a place to get the bottom bolt attached to the block (r/s if I remember correctly).

I'm pretty sure that the poly engine mount bosses (ears) on the block are the same.

If I can give you anymore details about the swap pm me and I'll tell you what I can.

Kayse and I love the way your car looks, checked it out again at the Nats over the weekend.
The pics in your rear window package tray have inspired her to do her own version of strong/great women in history in her 55 Desoto.

Now I just need to get the car done.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Thanks for the detail pics of the mounts. 1st thing tomorrow we are putting the '56 on a lift to see what we have to work with. I'm pretty sure we will be replacing some body mounts. And, of course, figuring out just what is wrong with the 315.
Glad you like the rear window shelf - that's one of my favorite features of the car. And I really like Kayse's idea for hers

If you decide to do a collage, here is how I did mine: I made the shelf out of luan. Then I ran high-quality copies on the best photo paper I could find. Here's the key: after you glue them down with spray glue, spray the photos with UV protectant available at most craft stores. You saw the photos in my shelf. They have been under all that glass for 3 or 4 years.

I make a harness to do a magnum swap. I have to successful cars done and another harness ready for the same year you are talking. This would use stock efi and have great driveability.

Look in the modern mopar parts forsale section if you are interested in this route. PS i am in dayton ohio if that helps.

For sure, not many people work with these early Forward look cars. Heck, it was at the mopar Nats and a couple guys were overheard muttering about "that Ford they let in". Oh well. In their defense it only says "Dodge" on the dash, but c'mon...
Here is the way I ran it for a few years:
