I've tried figuring this out by reading old posts....I'm more confused now!! My 68 charger should have drums on all 4 corners. When I bought it (as a non-running basket case) it had discs on the front. I know that guys are converting their cars with a-body discs - I think that might be what the prior owner did. I just don't know what kind of master cylinder to buy for this set up. The manual master cylinder currently on the car (has #31 26(6?) 809T stamped on the bottom. I ordered a master cylinder from autozone (with same 1 inch bore) for a 68 charger with manual disc front brakes. The new m/c physically appears to be the same, but the piston stroke is about 3/4 inch too short when I push a tape measure into the bore! I know that I have 10 inch drums (with 2 3/4 wide shoes) on the rear with wheel cylinders that have #2881613T cast on the driver's side. The driver's front disc caliper bracket has 776 23258 cast on it. The front rotors appear to be 11 inches in diameter with 748 cast on the driver's side hub area. I measured the spindle (4 9/16 inches tall), and it appears that I have the (correct) needed 73-76 a-body spindles used on drum/disc conversions. I attached a picture of the brake dist block / brake switch that came with the car. What manual master cylinder should I be using? FYI - my car does not have an adjustible brake pedal actuator/lever that connects the pedal to the m/c. I'm sorry this is so long, but I am trying to paint a complete picture for you.

I have a disc set form a late A-body. Manual disc I run the summit adjustable PV. Works pretty good. The one I bought brand new like yours and paid almost $100 for leaked (cracked) I had the Summit one on the shelf and dropped it in. No issues and have great pedal.

I realize that I posted a pic of the distribution / proportioning block. Sort of threw people off the trail. I need to know what year / model master cylinder I need to order for the wacky setup in my car? Thanks .

I just figured out the casting number on my master cylinder (had to really clean it off). It is #2660809. That should be for manual drum brakes on all 4 corners 67-70 B-body. I contacted Fenco direct - they said that they make one master cylinder for my car (the one I bought) M1323 or remanufactured NM1323. They said it will work on both drum & disc brake front! Does this sound right to you guys?? It does have different sized resevoirs on it like most disc brake / drum brake m/c that I've installed on other makes. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

See http://www.arengineering.com/articles/brakesmuscle.html or the article in the tech section on MOPARTS. From what I read today, you can do it! It appears that the previous owners of my car forgot to change the master cylinder and proportion valve / distribution block .

I guess it's working for me.

The Master cylinder with the bolt on cover is for DRUM brakes, a disc brake master cylinder has a much larger rear res because of the volume of fluid that goes thru the front brake circuit. the rebuilder is wrong in telling you what you have is for both , it may work , but safely as the front brakes wear ????

Maybe dr. diff or andy will chime in with what master to go to.

One question , do you want factory appearance ?

Yes I used the larger rear well master cylinder...see pic.

I asked Dr. Diff about a master and he recommended a 73 - 76 A-Body manual disc application. This based on the info that I'm using the smaller rear wheel cylinders I bought from Eburg for my B-Body application. The thought is hopefully the proportioning will be fine without the need for an adjustable valve.

As has been stated before, whatever master cylinder you end up using, it is IMPERATIVE that you install one meant for disc brakes. Self-adjusting drum brakes do not experience an increase the required volume of brake fluid as the brake lining wears, because the wheel cylinder pistons reside in the same area throughout the life of the shoes. The same cannot be said for disc brakes, because the caliper pistons reside further and further out of their bores as the pads wear. This is why there is a substantially larger volume of fluid capacity in the M.C. reservoir for the half of the system with the discs.

Down to just a blue car now.

Thanks JohnRR. I'm not worried at all about keeping factory appearance. It's taken me almost 7 years to get this car finished - I don't want to wad it up on the test drive!!!

Thanks. I guess I will try to return this m/c and buy a 73-76 A-body m/c.
