I am asking for a friend at work, since I am not home.Which way do the rods in a small block get installed relative to the oiling hole(groove) on the big end?

The oiling groove points toward the center of the block. This allows splash lubrication for the camshaft. If the oil grooves point towards the oil pan rail, the lobes run dry and early cam failure will result.

Which they are finding is a myth. A carry over from way early engines with the splash oiling system probably. In fact a lot of the newer after market replacement bearings are not grooved for this and there are no ill effects. Plenty of crankcase splash with out this. In fact in some cases it can lead to excessive oil consumption do to more of oil on the cylinder walls than the rings can control.

Right on. Holes not needed and don't exist on most late models.

Well, yeah.....
Aftermarket rods often have/had no squirters. The Manleys in my stroked 440 do not. The crank is an Eagle with a radiused fillet, so the chamfered edge of the rod goes to the counterweight.
I'd say that whether or not people think that it isn't necessary, you should still put the rods in the way that the factory did. It can't hurt and MAY help.
