I my 1970 Challenger has what appears to be rust spec along the lower panel. It looks like tar, but I think it might be small bits of surface rust. The car was store for over 20 years without a wash. Does anyone know of a product or process that can assist with removing the rust, without harming the paint. I would like to keep it as close to original as possible. Thanks

You could try a product called Evapo-Rust. Not sure if it will harm the paint, but it claims to be environmentally friendly. I used it on a rusty barrel on a muzzleloading rifle I have. It didn't harm the bluing, so maybe it won't harm the paint? You need to somehow submerge the rusted part, though. It removes the rust in minutes, or so it claims. It did well for me.

Submerging your "part" is obviously out of the question !! Fill a spray bottle and spray the areas and keep them wet. It would help if you used a soft brush and lightly scrup the areas as well. If the rust is light like you say then it should clean up quickly.

So, once you've gotten rid of the rust, then what ?!?!?!

There should not be two http://
I took it off and still didn't work. It is probably too big. Here it is smaller.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I have had great luck with turtle wax's chrome polish... it has something in it that will eat rust down to the smallest speck, and won't harm paint, other than making it shiny.

It also works well on plastic lenses and other stuff, but I've cleaned pot metal trim and chrome plating that looked awful and had it cleaned down to the specs of corrosion that had went through to the metal... I use it on my rims where the rust collects in the groove of the outer lip...

I'd go the rubbing compound or chrome polish route then follow with a coat of wax.

What do you plan to do with the bare metal once the rust is removed ?

I have good luck with the "safest rust remover" you can apply it right to the spot. Cant say for sure about the paint I have only submerged the parts when I used it.

Once the rust in removed. I hoping to do some touch up primer and paint work to the individual spots, unless someone has a better idea. Remember, I am not too worried about noticing to touch ups, because I am not planning on restoring the car. It will be left as a survior.
