i have a 440 with stock forged crank and LY rods, haven't had it apart yet, but i was planning on rebuild on the cheap with a set of 915 heads.
good idea / bad idea? is it worth putting any $ into the 915 heads or should i go right for a set of source heads?

My old irons heads were decent.I had them redone first.200 bucks for valves, new guides, seals plus the springs etc whic I needed because of my cam.I had 500 in machine work and my guy is really reasonable on labor. He did open them up a bit but not a full port.I had almost 800 in parts and labor not including the springs, ertainers and keepers. The Stealths were a grand all new just upgraded the springs etc. They are lighter and flow more.Rocky

BUT THEN the "effective" compression ratio will be cut-down using the alum heads.
That myth has been dyno proven to be nothing but an old wives tale.

Bang for the buck = 915's. I have them on my 440 and couldn't be happier. 2.08 I, 1.74 E and 76 cc chambers. Low end torque is impressive.
Did you do any work to them or just stock rebuild.
Obviously new valves, then just gasket matched the intake and exhaust ports.
