I have a 38 truck cab and front clip that I bought for cash 30+ years ago. No paperwork changed hands. I'm uncertain if there is even a number on the cab. I've seen several pickup rods made from a cab, front clip and generic bed. Anyone have any suggestion how to get a title for this project in Arizona?

Thanks,
R.

First, research where the numbers are on the stuff you've got. The internet is your friend.
Second, go to the AZ MVD website and get the straight info. SEMA also has a handy guide for all 50 states.
Last, ignore all the helpful hints from everyone who doesn't work for the AZ MVD or a place that deals with this all the time. What happens in GA doesn't apply, buying a title isn't the smart way, and some of the suggestions may be illegal.

EDIT: BTW, print out all the research you have done. Numbers and the forms for the state. They like it when you are prepared and have all the stuff needed.

Rod gives good advice.

Just to throw my experience in, I think at best you will need a bonded title. Years ago, and things could have changed since, I was titling my 64 300 in AZ, bought it in CA, had a title signed over but had to go thru a VIN inspection. AZ didn't like the looks of my VIN plate and I ended up having to get a bonded title for the stated amount. Might not be too relevant to you though, I had a title in hand. However, the MVD inspector was very helpful and walked me through the issue. Of course that was more than 20 years ago.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I am always looking around and today I found this really cool answer to my question:

SEMA is an organization we should all be supporting. They have done more for "car guys" than about anyone else, especially in watchdogging negative legislation.

As Ron said check with the DMV and actually a visit may be in order. From personal experience with ADOT the knowledge level on specialty cases varies a lot from DMV to DMV, so having read the statutes is also a good idea.

Here’s the link, titling is covered in Chapter 7.

http://www.azleg.gov/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp?Title=28

That being said, you could be in for an interesting time, depending on who you get at DMV. The truck originally the VIN located in 2 places, a tag located on the firewall under the steering column and a stamped number (matching the VIN tag), located on the outside of the driver side frame rail above and slightly forward of the front axel. As the TAG is easy to spot (and easy to remove as it’s only held on with 2 screws), I’m assuming it’s not there and it doesn’t sound like you have the frame.

With no VINs you might not have enough at this point to apply for either an abandoned vehicle or bonded vehicle title. ADOT will have to be the final determining authority.

Anyway, good luck.

Thanks, the cab is in another state (you're right, no frame) so it will be a while before I can check it out. It's actually a '38 ford 1 1/2 ton cab, the one with the barrel-shaped grill with horizontal bars. Ugly, but it and the truck's flathead cost me $15 about 40 years ago. It's nice to have a farm to keep rusty scrap metal at!
