hello
i was wondering if there is anything special about the msd pro billet distributor. i see that 440 source sells one for less then half the price. has anybody had any problems with any non msd distributors, what are your experiences? just doing a budget build for street strip and wondering what distributor to go with.thanks in advance. oh by the way it is a 440 and it will be around 600 hp.
thanks, matt

the source dizzy is a Pro Comp. i had a MSD but it wasn't user friendly especially trying to take the cap off with the allen key headed bolts. i have a Pro Comp dizzy on my engine now & find it works every bit as good but then i'm also using a crank trigger.

that's a good thought, although i'm just guessing he's looking to spend less money, not more.

I've used the stock Mopar electronic distributors for years, no troubles and no issues I do replace the advance springs and depending on how much mechanical advance the distributor has I will shorten up the mechanical advance so I can run the idle timing at or close to 16 BTDC and end up with between 34 and 38 total BTDC, depending on the track elevation and motor I don't use the vacume advance either, I have hook up a hose to the distributor and carb. that is blocked internally when I use to play games on the street

I have one on my small block and love it but there is a part that is subject to corrosion;

Not my picture but mine looked just like that

I've just put a dab of dielectric grease on it.

I had to replace my distributor a few weeks ago. I ended up using a Mopar Dist from F.B.O. Don set the advance in it exactly as I wanted it and it cost the same as an out of the box from Jegs / Summit. Cant beat that. I went with the mopar unit to retain my Firecore wires.

thanks for the suggestion gus. i have looked into the firecore dist and it is cheapre then the msd and seems to be better made and the guy at firecore gives great customer service. i will have to see how many pennies i have left when it comes time to crack down and buy a distributor.to the post above about the crank trigger, i have thought about the crank trigger and it is something i want to do, but i am just focused on getting some power to the ground. ill probabley make that upgrade later. has anybody used the pro billet distributor from the guys in tennessee. they do not have a brand and it is super cheap. i know you get what you pay for, i just want to know of any experiences. i found them on ebay.
thanks for the responses guys i appreciate it.
thanks, matt

Don't have much to add here. Have never run anything but modified stock distributors to 7000+ rpm. Limit the advance by adding some weld in the pin slots, light springs, lock the vacuum advance plate, good cap and rotor and you're set.

The problem I had with the "pro-billet" distributors out there that many vendors and E-bay are selling is that they wont fit with most aftermarket cylinder heads.You would have to grind the head and/or the distributor to make it fit.The OP mentioned 600 HP so I just figured he has already spent the money on heads so why buy a distributor that wont fit

this was the reason i changed away from the MSD distributor, to remove my rocker covers i had to remove the dizzy cap first, not that it was a big problem but the amount of times i dropped the allen head screw on the ground when reinstalling started to P me off so in went the Pro Comp dizzy & now everything is [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] dory waay to easy.
