It's not always how much you spend. Combination is the key. If all the parts are not pulling the rope in the same direction, it WILL disapoint and frustrate you.

I agree completely with this.When HardcoreB and I were in the planning stages I asked sooo many questions trying to make sure everything was going to play nice together. I could not afford to throw parts at it only to find out they didn't work. Pick a goal, figure out what it will take to achieve that goal, and do a lot of diligent hunting for deals on parts. They are out there. Do as much of the work yourself that you can and don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm very fortunate to have a good friend that I can bounce ideas off of and ask stupid questions to without being embarassed. Thank you Sean!
