thats for sure the right way to do it. but I have welded them with the axels and center section in. was a low HP bracket car grant you. but it worked more than once and is still working. I am sure if we pulled it down and checked it with a jig it would be out. but the axels still slide in easy and the rear makes no noise. I tack them, then go back and weld very small areas and let them cool. on a street car or low HP you can get away with it. if it was a high HP car you probably wouldn't be using an 83/4 anyway
Also tap each weld with a slag hammer to relieve it as it cools and it will not pull.....
